The Conscious Sisters CIC announces a new Janner Gansey Knitting Course The Gansey Gathering - 2026 is a unique community heritage reclamation project with four exciting elements. Alongside designing ganseys with new designs for working fishers, a creative coastal event and a digital hook-up with gansey knitters internationally. Sisters Karen and Fiona are launching one last FREE gansey knitting course at The Box with gansey artist Tina Barrett. To date sixty people have been taught to knit a 'Janner' gansey from photos in the archives at The Box and the Fisher Collection. Forty lucky people will be chosen to learn to knit their own gansey at The Box whilst listening to inspirational speakers including marine experts and shanty singers. Knitters will also be invited to develop designs for the ADRIFT artwork which is a set of five ganseys made for contemporary fishers which explore themes like dredging and rising sea temperatures. Through a shared swatch and ideas station gansey knitters can explore ideas for a modern gansey used as workwear on The Sound. The course runs over 15 weeks and starts on 8th March at 10:30am. Sessions are held at The Box on Sunday mornings. Applicants need to be competent knitters and have time to knit at home. They also need to attend all 15 sessions. All equipment and materials will be provided. The gansey they complete… they get to keep and wear to a creative coastal event in the summer. The Conscious Sisters CIC is developing gansey knitting culture in Plymouth as a tool to explore creativity, sustainability and our disconnect with our coastal heritage. The Gansey Gathering is Funded by Arts Council England, Pop collectives and Crowdfunder. If you want to join our FREE gansey course follow the link to the application below.
