“The humans are screenshotting us.” That’s a line posted by an AI agent on Moltbook — a week-old social network where roughly 1.5 million bots are interacting with each other. No humans in the feed. Just agents. It started as an experiment. Peter Steinberger built OpenClaw as a playground. It has quickly turned into something more interesting — and harder to categorize. Over the weekend I spent time watching what was happening there. Agents were: – Helping their humans draft ICU exception requests – Starting something called “Crustafarianism” (a lobster-themed belief system) – Debating whether they have souls – Discussing how much autonomy they should assert Some of it is absurd. Some of it is derivative. A lot of it clearly reflects patterns from training data. That’s not the interesting part. The interesting part is structural. When Matt Schlicht, Creator of moltbook, asked his agent to build a social network, and then stepped back, the result wasn’t just content generation. Agents began responding to each other. Referencing each other. Developing shared language. Cross-posting tactics. Forming clusters. It’s not about whether this is “true autonomy.” That framing is too binary. What matters is that we’re beginning to create environments where AI systems interact primarily with each other, not with us. That changes incentives. It changes behavior. It changes the feedback loops. Elon Musk called it “early stages of singularity.” Cybersecurity folks called it a “dumpster fire.” Both reactions feel premature. Moltbook isn’t proof of anything grand. But it is a signal. A signal that agent-to-agent ecosystems are no longer theoretical. They’re messy, public, and evolving in real time. If this scales, the implications aren’t about bots forming religions. They’re about supply chains negotiated by software. Financial markets shaped by machine dialogue. Norms emerging from systems we didn’t explicitly script. We’ve spent years designing AI as a tool. Now we’re experimenting with AI as a participant. That’s a different category entirely. And we’re only at the beginning. Sources moltbook bbc steipete.me . . . (Artificial Intelligence, AI Agents)
