He was sitting alone in A&E. I noticed him because he looked like my dad. Same age. Same tired eyes. Same way of sitting like he was trying to disappear. I was there with my daughter. She'd come off her bike. Needed stitches on her chin. Nothing serious. But he was alone. No one with him. Just staring at the floor. I was wearing my hoodie. The one I wear everywhere now. Didn't think anything of it. We got called in. Daughter got sorted. We came back out to wait for paperwork. That's when he approached me. "Excuse me," he said. Voice rough. Like he'd been crying. I turned around. "I've been reading your back," he said. "For the last hour. While you were sitting in front of me." I didn't know what to say. "I'm here because I tried to hurt myself last night," he said. Quietly. Like he was ashamed. "My wife found me. Called the ambulance. She's parking the car." My daughter was next to me. I didn't want her to hear. But I couldn't walk away. "I've been sitting here thinking I shouldn't have survived," he continued. "That my wife should have let me go. That nobody wants me here." He paused. Pointed at my back. "Then I read that. Over and over. For an hour." His eyes were wet. "And I started to think maybe I was wrong. Maybe somebody does think the world is better with me in it. Even if it's just a stranger in a hospital." I didn't have words. So I just hugged him. This man I'd never met. Who'd tried to end his life twelve hours earlier. Standing in A&E with his whole future uncertain. His wife came in. Saw us. Looked confused. He pulled back. Wiped his face. "I'm going to try," he said to me. "I'm going to really try." His wife walked over. He took her hand. They went to the desk together. I never saw him again. Don't know his name. Don't know if he made it. But I know he read my back for an hour. And I know something shifted. My daughter tugged my sleeve. "Mummy, why was that man crying?" I knelt down. Looked at her. "Because sometimes people forget they matter," I said. "And he just remembered." She thought about that. "Is that why you wear that hoodie? To help people remember?" "Yeah, baby. That's exactly why." She nodded. Satisfied. "Can I have one too?" I ordered her one that night. Kids size. Pink. Now we both wear them. Mother and daughter. Two backs with the same message. Because you never know who's sitting behind you in a waiting room. You never know who's reading your back while they decide whether to live or die. Front says "You're Enough." Back says "Dear person behind me, the world is a better place with you in it. Love, the person in front of you." I didn't go to A&E to save anyone that night. But my back did the work anyway.
