I Had to Reset My Mindset! There was a time in my life when I believed my destiny would happen automatically. I thought that because God had a plan for my life, I would simply arrive at it. I had what I now call the "bed of roses" syndrome. I believed that when my time came, everything would fall into place without much effort. To be fair, it wasn't because my parents failed to prepare me while growing up. Especially my father. He constantly taught me that every worthwhile destination has hurdles, battles, disappointments, and dark seasons before the light. But I didn't truly understand what he meant. I thought faith meant I didn't have to struggle. I thought trusting God meant I didn't have to prepare. It affected even my academics. While other students stayed awake reading for examinations, I would hardly prepare. My mindset was simple: "God is in absolute control - My destiny is in His hands - Why should I be afraid?" Then reality happened. I watched my classmates move ahead. I watched people who started after me overtake me. Some of my juniors caught up with me and even went further. I would open Facebook and see celebration after celebration— graduation pictures, new jobs, new achievements, new milestones. Meanwhile, I wasn't making the progress I had imagined. I had to forcefully snap myself out of that delusion. It dawned on me that faith is not an excuse for laziness. Trusting God does not cancel personal responsibility. God gives purpose, but we must pursue it. God opens doors, but we must prepare ourselves to walk through them. That realization changed my life. I had to reset my mindset. I stopped waiting for success to happen. I started working for it. I prayed harder. I studied harder. I prepared better. I became intentional. Today, by God's grace, I hold degrees and I have the privilege of serving as a full time lecturer in the University. Looking back, I now understand that my father's lessons were preparing me for a reality I wasn't ready to accept. Waiting for life to happen because you believe God has already ordained your future - please hear me. Yes, pray. Yes, trust God. Yes, believe His promises. But also prepare. Learn. Work. Grow. Develop yourself. Because God often fulfils His promises through prepared people. The Bible says, "Do you see a man diligent in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before unknown men." — Proverbs 22:29. Your destiny is in God's hands. But your preparation is in yours. And sometimes, the breakthrough you've been praying for is waiting for the mindset you've been unwilling to change.
