This is long overdue, but something I feel led to share. There are moments in life that quietly change your direction… and moments that stop you in your tracks and change you forever. Before I ever became a chiropractor, I was an athlete. I was on a rugby tour in New Zealand when one hard tackle changed everything. I herniated multiple discs in my neck and completely lost function in my right arm. I was scared. Frustrated. Unsure if I’d ever feel normal again. I tried everything. Nothing worked. Until I met a chiropractor back in Victoria, B.C. That care didn’t just help me heal — it gave me my life back. I returned to the field. But more importantly, it opened my eyes to what’s possible when the body is supported instead of suppressed. That experience planted the seed that eventually led me to chiropractic. Years later, that belief was tested in a way no injury ever could. When my first daughter, Vivian, was born… she wasn’t breathing. There was no warning. No explanation. She was rushed to the NICU and placed on a cooling blanket for seven days. We couldn’t hold her. We couldn’t touch her. My wife, Rachelle, was completely shattered. Vivian had tubes, seizures, and constant tests and monitors. Day after day… she didn’t wake up. On the seventh day, the doctors sat us down and told us this is it, they had done everything they could. They were going to remove her monitors and take her off of the ventilator. As a parent, I felt completely helpless. But as a chiropractor, I couldn’t ignore what I felt in my heart. I believed her longer birth may have placed stress on her nervous system — particularly the upper cervical area involved in breathing and neurological function. With nothing to lose and everything to hope for, we gently checked her spine and she received the softest adjustment imaginable. And then… her eyes opened. Her breathing began to normalize. Her body started to respond. In the following days the nurses called her “The Comeback Kid.” That moment forever changed how I saw health, healing, and trust in the body. And just when we thought we had learned our hardest lesson… At the beginning of 2024, our sweet little boy Weston was diagnosed with a brain tumor. It started with small things. Subtle signs that felt slightly off. Nothing alarming at first…but he just kept getting worse, deep down, I knew something wasn’t right. Then everything changed. Weston needed brain surgery. Watching your child lie in a hospital bed —arms with IVs, head bandaged, surrounded by machines — fighting a battle he never chose… there are no words that can describe it. But even in the fear and chaos, something became incredibly clear. Three moments in my life. Three turning points. One consistent lesson. Don’t ignore what feels “off.” That quiet voice matters. Early action matters. It did for me. It did for Vivian. And it did for Weston. And prepare your health and your heart — because life doesn’t wait until we’re ready. When challenges come, being physically strong, mentally grounded, and supported makes all the difference (Thank-you to my wonderful Family and Friends) Today, I do my best to show up differently because of these experiences. I believe with everything in me that the power that made the body is the power that heals the body — when interference is reduced and the body is allowed to do what it was designed to do. I share this not just as a chiropractor, but as someone who understands what it feels like to be scared, in pain, overwhelmed, and unsure of what comes next. If you’re struggling… if you feel stuck… if you’ve been told “this is just something you have to live with” — please know there may be another path forward. And if this story resonates with you, or reminds you of someone who needs hope today, feel free to share it. This brings me to a special invitation. Conditions like headaches, neck pain, numbness, low back pain, and sciatica are the body’s way of saying something is wrong. If left untreated they can lead to chronic and severe pain. Because we're committed to helping the Grand Rapids community we're offering a consultation, exam, and digital motion X-rays (if necessary) for only $27. This is normally valued at $275. We have helped many people with these conditions using safe and NON-SURGICAL methods. Call 616-432-3103 or visit the link below to sign up for an appointment: https://www.bestgrandrapidschiropractor.com/special-offer/ Our schedule fills up quickly and we only have room on the appointment books for a limited number of new patients each month (We dont want to overcrowd our practice) Call us today before the symptoms worsen and spots are all taken. Yours in health, Dr. Matthew Phinney
