Hammond's ‘bird people,’ so central to his practice since the early 1990s, occupy a liminal space as guardians, mourners, and witnesses. Their specimen-like stillness recalls an era when living birds were translated into museum skins and Victorian curiosity cabinets, and the burning of bones becomes an elegy for species and landscapes reshaped by colonial histories. Currently in our Works of Art live auction catalogue are multiple artworks by Hammond, including late work from his final major series, Wishbone Ash (2010–11), is refined, confident, contemplative, but unsentimental, and deeply symbolic. It is a triumph of contemporary New Zealand art that balances visual elegance with Hammond's long-standing preoccupation with mortality, memory, and transformation. Webb’s Works of Art live auction presents a rigorously composed catalogue of blue-chip, museum-quality works that articulate the breadth and depth of significant twentieth- and twenty-first-century practice. Anchored by canonical figures in New Zealand and some international art, the selection reflects a sustained engagement with abstraction, figuration, and cultural identity. Among the principal highlights are major works by Colin McCahon, Ralph Hotere, Gretchen Albrecht and Bill Hammond, alongside paintings by Charles Frederick Goldie and Frances Hodgkins that speak to the historical foundations of the canon. Contemporary voices, including Fiona Pardington and Lisa Reihana, extend this trajectory, while an international inflection is provided by the likes of Andy Warhol. A considered selection from the private collection of Sir Miles Warren offers insight into the intellectual and aesthetic preoccupations of one of the country’s defining architects, with selected works auctioned in support of the Ōhinetahi House & Garden Charitable Trust. Complementing the catalogue, a national tour presents highlights in Queenstown, Christchurch and Wellington before the full viewing in Auckland, providing collectors the opportunity for examination and discussion in advance of the live auction. 30.03.26 Works of Art | Live Auction webbs.co.nz National Tour Dates & Details: Queenstown Viewing | 4—7 March Launch | Wednesday 4 March, 6.30pm (Invitation only ) Location | Amisfield, 10 Arrowtown-Lake Hayes Road Contact | Sean Duxfield, Specialist, Art [email protected] | +64 21 053 6504 Wellington Viewing | 12—14 March Launch ‍| Wednesday 11 March, 5.30pm Location | Webb's, 23 Marion Street, Te Aro Contact | Mark Hutchins-Pond Senior Specialist, Art [email protected] | +64 22 095 5610 Christchurch Viewing | 18—21 March Launch | Saturday21 March, 11am Location | Ōhinetahi, 31 Governors Bay Teddington Road Contact | Sean Duxfield, Specialist, Art [email protected] | +64 21 053 6504 Auckland Viewing | 25—29 March Launch | Wednesday 25 March, 6pm Live Auction | Monday 30 March, 6.30pm Location | Webb’s, 33a Normanby Road, Mount Eden Contact | Emily Gardener, Director of Art [email protected] | +64 22 595 5610
