Ad text
Jelly is an angel, he is a good boy who always tries to do everything right and gets very worried if he gets in trouble. However he used to struggle to pick up his back legs for the farrier, he would slam them down and get very anxious. Positive reinforcement with food and bodywork helped but it was still a challenge. The reasons for this; - Iliopsoas scarring bilaterally - Lumbosacropelvic dysfunction and at times lumbar misalignment - Myofibrillar myopathy (an underlying muscle conditions that affects the contractile proteins in warmbloods - he used to tie up regularly) With dietary management, postural and core strengthening he is able to be trimmed without anxiety and without slamming his legs down. A horse that is struggling to stand to be trimmed generally is finding it challenging to undergo the range of motion that is being asked of them or to balance on 3 legs. We need to consider what the horse is trying to communicate with us before we just assume that they are just making the farriers/trimmers life difficult. Yes some horses have had bad experiences that have created the behaviour but horses generally want to take the path of least resistance and we need to consider their physical comfort when standing for the trimmer/farrier.
