Chapter 1 The First Day of the Apocalypse "Emergency broadcast! Emergency broadcast! "This is a bulletin from the Ministry of Defense. Everyone, stay at home and don't go out! "All industries are now to halt production. Schools are to suspend classes. Everyone, go home immediately! "Attention! Attention! A strange human has appeared on Longway Road in Zephyr City. Pale-skinned, with gray pupils, he bites anyone he sees. Experts initially estimated that it was highly likely a human mutated into a zombie due to a virus!" The news came in a deluge, from the large screens outside the shopping malls, the news channels, and the radio broadcasts. People on the streets were running home in a panic. Antisocial individuals armed with clubs were out, acting like they were at a riot, smashing and looting. Chaos reigned supreme across Zephyr City, the entire country, and even the whole planet. As the sun sank below the horizon, casting the land into an inky darkness, the last vestiges of sunlight faded away. In a gully on a small hillside, a woman lay sprawled, her hair in disarray. Despite the poor visibility, one could still discern her delicate features, silky skin, and a figure so alluring it was bound to set one's imagination racing. However, this woman was in a sorry state, drenched in sweat and contorted in pain. Suddenly, she bolted upright! Elena Murphy took a deep, steadying breath. Her large eyes scanned the surroundings warily. She glanced down at her body, then at the city below, where police cars were everywhere and panicked shouts filled the air. Elena frowned slightly and immediately looked at her wrist. The watch was still there, intact. This watch was supposed to have gone missing during a mission a month after the zombie outbreak! The time on the watch read 6:30 p.m., April 9th, 2034. It was the very first day of the zombie apocalypse, and also the day she was framed by Sofia Solis! Big beads of sweat trickled down her fair cheeks. She'd traveled back in time! Elena narrowed her beautiful eyes. It was only after being framed, thrown into a horde of zombies, and becoming a wronged soul in her past life that she realized she was the original female lead in a novel where the female supporting character achieved a successful rise in a post-apocalyptic setting. The female supporting character, Sofia, was well-versed in all the plot details. At first, she tricked Elena out of her Portable Spatial Ring with a capacity of about 35,315 cubic feet. As Elena's roommate, Sofia also borrowed money from her, took out a huge loan, and stocked up the entire space with supplies. At the onset of the zombie outbreak, she lured Elena into a forest. Knowing from the novel that numerous zombies would gather here at that time, Sofia had intended to kill Elena from the start. Surprisingly, Elena didn't die. She survived with sheer willpower and even awakened her Lightning Power ahead of schedule. By the time she reached the national base in Heriton City, Sofia had become a member of a special operations team with her Spatial Power and Water Power and had even hooked up with Elena's childhood friend, Dylan Morales. Although Elena was constantly outsmarted, she fought tooth and nail to survive. Through her own efforts, she joined a special operations team as well. After the national base was overrun by a zombie wave, she followed the team to the largest Dawn Base. It was all because she'd been too naive and couldn't see people for who they were. She trusted a teammate who'd been through thick and thin with her, only to be pushed into a horde of high-level zombies by him when she was seriously injured while trying to save a team member. After Elena's death in the novel, the story went blank. No one knew what the world would be like after that. At this thought, a surge of Lightning Power crackled in Elena's hand. Why do I travel back to this moment? And my Portable Spatial Ring is gone. Damn it! Today, she was supposed to be on her way to Heriton City by car. There, she'd run into Dylan, her long-lost childhood sweetheart, and they'd recognize each other through the bracelet from their childhood. But right now, both the bracelet and the Portable Spatial Ring were in the hands of that Sofia! Elena's eyes turned icy cold. Without hesitation, she slowly got to her feet and stared down at the city below. She silently vowed to exact revenge in this life and reclaim everything that was rightfully hers! The lightning in her hand seemed to sense Elena's seething emotions. It grew wilder and larger, scorching the nearby shrubs with a sizzling sound. "Ding! The Doomsday God-Becoming System is bound." A look of surprise flashed across Elena's eyes. "Who's there?" she asked. "The first task of the Doomsday God-Becoming System is released: Fill the entire space with supplies within three days. A reward will be given upon successful completion. Failure to complete the task will result in immediate elimination." Elena was stunned. Suddenly, a vast space materialized in her mind. Unlike Sofia's space of about 35,315 cubic feet, her space was a colossal 353,147 cubic feet! It was as large as a three-story building, approximately 328 feet high, with a ground area of about 10,764 square feet. Even for metahumans who later awakened Spatial Power, they initially only had a space of about 3,531 cubic feet. And with each rank-up, their space only increased by another 3,531 cubic feet. This space of Elena's was simply gigantic! Elena tried to move her fingers slightly and collect the trash beside her into the space. Sure enough, with a thought, the trash appeared in the space and was then immediately expelled. "Non-supply trash detected. It has been removed." Elena was taken aback. Wow, is it smart-sensing? "Well, yeah." Hearing the system's voice, Elena was more convinced of her guess. This system could really communicate with her in her mind. She didn't waste any time, tugging at her skirt as she asked, "This outfit isn't very convenient. Do you have any gear?" "Ding! Reward for initial equipment—a set of light-armor black stealth suit, a short dagger, and +1 to physical fitness." Physical fitness? Before Elena could be puzzled, the next second, she felt a subtle change in her body. It seemed a bit stronger. At the same time, a tight-fitting black suit appeared on her body. It was designed like a military uniform but fit her perfectly, as if it was tailor-made for her. Elena was quite satisfied. The dagger in her hand emitted a faint glow and was extremely sharp. Her beautiful eyes also hardened. She looked at a motorcycle abandoned by the roadside below and rushed down at full speed. Hopping on the motorcycle, Elena looked in the direction of the city center and accelerated away. She drove at breakneck speed, going against the flow of people. The closer she got to the city center, the denser the crowd on the road became. Everyone was in a hurry to get home. This was the beginning of the zombie outbreak—the first stage. Zombies had just emerged, and the crowd was in a panic. But many still thought it was just a minor virus infection that could be quickly controlled. All industries had stopped production, and the shopping malls were closed. People who couldn't stock up on supplies were rushing home. Elena sped along. Occasionally, zombies would suddenly appear on the road, scaring people to scatter in all directions. This was the perfect time to grab supplies! Elena roared up to the largest shopping mall in Zephyr City on the motorcycle. The place was in shambles. Occasionally, there were a few zombies and people who had been bitten and couldn't leave safely, wailing and running around in a frenzy. There were also some terrorists and bandits smashing and looting the shops. The black suit given by the system was highly concealable. Elena wore a black mask on her face and a black hood on her head. She was completely covered up, and no one could see her face. All the doors on the first floor of the mall were sealed, except for the one where three terrorists had smashed open. Approaching steadily, Elena caught the attention of three men. They turned around and sized her up. Even without seeing her face clearly, they could tell from her figure that she was an absolute bombshell. The leader smirked and said in a flirtatious tone, "Hey, babe, how about having some fun with me?" In a split second, Elena struck. The man's eyes bulged out in shock, and he crumpled to the ground. Before the other two could even blink, she unleashed a bolt of lightning with her left hand and, with a dagger in her right, slit the throat of one of them. In her previous life, she'd been in the thick of the fight, slaying countless zombies. Through sheer grit and determination, she'd worked her way up to become a squad leader at Dawn Base. Her combat and killing skills had been as sharp as a blade. Stepping into a clothing store, Elena merely flicked her fingers at a clothes rack, and poof! All the clothes on it were stored in her space. She then attempted to store all the clothes in the store with a mental command. When nothing happened, she didn't get flustered. Instead, Elena focused her mind on the entire store, and in an instant, every single piece of clothing disappeared into her space. A wave of dizziness washed over her. She reached up to steady herself, pressing a hand against her forehead. It took a huge toll on her mental energy. Maybe she was still not strong enough, but the efficiency was off-the-charts. One corner of her space was already overflowing with clothes. Without hesitation, she rushed into the mall and began to clear out the first-floor stores. Clothing, luxury goods, digital gadgets, electronics, desserts, snacks—she left no stone unturned. Wherever she went, it was like a vacuum had passed through, leaving nothing behind. Chapter 2 Hoarding Spree Her next target was the second floor. There stood the largest department supermarket in Zephyr City. Elena dashed up there at full speed. She ransacked the supermarket like a whirlwind. Shelves of snacks, fruits, deli foods, seasonings, and even coffee were quickly swept into her space. And the seafood section? Crabs of all kinds were all stored away, along with their water tanks. It was a convenient bonus that made Elena's eyes light up. After emptying the supermarket, she gave a powerful kick to the door of the back warehouse. Inside, room after room was filled with crates of supplies. With her long legs, Elena moved nimbly, and soon the back warehouse was also cleared out. Leaning against the wall, she gasped for breath. Just then, the system's voice rang out. "Exercise quota met. Physical fitness +1, speed +1, toughness +1." Elena raised an eyebrow and immediately felt a bit more agile. A glance at her watch showed that it was 10 p.m. The space had a compression function, so all those goods only occupied about 141,259 cubic feet. Popping a bubblegum into her mouth, Elena noticed a pile of collapsed cardboard boxes in the corner. A short, chubby man in a chef's uniform was cowering inside, looking at her in sheer terror, as if she were a monster. "Hey, it's the end of the world. Snap out of it and find a way to survive," Elena said casually before striding away. The chef stared blankly, rubbing his eyes and slapping himself hard to confirm he wasn't dreaming. Elena was well-versed in end-of-the-world survival. No way would she take the elevator. She took the stairs and headed straight for Century City Mall across the road, which was full of 4S stores with numerous cars and motorcycles. She intended to have them all. On the street, a man was running for his life with a zombie in hot pursuit. Elena just brushed past them as if they were non-existent and made a beeline for Century City Mall. In her previous life, after awakening her Super Power, she'd always tried to help those attacked by zombies. But she'd learned the hard way that only a few people were grateful. Even comrades who had shared life-and-death experiences with her could be bought off for profit. So this time, Elena was living for herself, with self-interest as her guiding principle. At Century City Mall, zeroing in on a glass door, she let out a powerful kick. She was decked out in top-notch gear. It hugged her body snugly, yet it was as tough as nails, shrugging off blades, bullets, flames, and water alike. Elena took another couple of whacks at the door, but it was a tough nut to crack; the glass was incredibly solid. Two kicks didn't do the job, so she grabbed a steel rod. Channeling all her Lightning Power into it, her veins bulging with effort, she swung it down with all her might, shattering the large glass wall. Stepping inside gracefully, she started collecting cars one by one. There were also luxury stores and dress shops. Jewelry, designer bags, high-end uniforms, and limited-edition items all found their way into her space. By then, her space was filled up to about 282,519 cubic feet. It was 2 a.m. Thanks to her improved physical fitness, she wasn't very sleepy. As a metahuman, Elena needed less sleep than ordinary people, and as her Super Power grew, she'd need even less. Sleep was more for body repair than just rest. So, Elena decided to keep going. Elena sped through the city streets on a customized motorcycle she'd snatched from a bike shop. Whenever zombies crossed her path, she'd either mow them down or use her dagger to take them out. For those out of immediate reach, she'd hurl bolts of lightning. As she zoomed along, Elena also ransacked several pharmacies, grabbing every kind of medication she could find. Even though there'd be metahumans with healing abilities later, these drugs were still essential, especially in the early days of the apocalypse. Some folks up in the buildings were stunned when they saw Elena. Many whipped out their phones, snapping pics and posting online, saying they'd seen a real-life superheroine. In less than an hour, Elena's storage space was packed to the gills. There wasn't even an inch left for another item. She slipped into a quiet alley and waited for the system to dish out the rewards. "Beep. The 353,147-cubic-foot space is fully stocked with supplies. Task rewards are being issued now. "Reward One: Expand the space threefold to 1,059,441 cubic feet." As the system announced, the space in Elena's mind expanded instantly to about the size of a nine-story building! "Reward Two: Add a time-stop protection area. All supplies will be concentrated there." After that, a pale blue light appeared beneath the supplies. "So, this means all these supplies won't go bad, right?" Elena asked casually, leaning against the dirty alley wall. "Yes. Reward Three: Get weapons—throwing darts and grappling hooks; and upgrade all stats by one level." Right after, another message popped up. "Physical fitness +1, speed +1, toughness +1, beauty +1, strength +1." Elena blew a bubble and said, "What's with the beauty stat?" "Even though you're the campus belle of Zephyr City Film and Television Academy, we thought it'd be good to add a beauty stat to keep you looking hot." Elena grinned. Then she asked, "What are my current overall stats?" "Physical fitness 55, speed 45, toughness 65, beauty 98, strength 23. The max for each stat among humans before the apocalypse was 100. Post-apocalypse values are unknown." Elena nodded. She took off her hood, letting her long, curly hair fall. Looking at the chaos on the street with more and more zombies showing up, she asked, "Alright, what's the next task?" "The next task is out: Fill another space of 353,147 cubic feet with supplies and upgrade your Super Power to level 2. You've got a week. If you finish on time, you get the rewards. If not, you're out." To level up her Super Power to level 2, she needed 100 primary crystal cores. Right now, all the zombies were low-level, with only level-1 crystal cores in their heads. In about a week, the zombies would mutate into level-2 ones, and there'd be level-2 crystal cores. To go from level 2 to level 3 of the Super Power, she'd need 100 level-2 crystal cores. It was obvious that the higher the Super Power level, the tougher it was to upgrade. In her past life, she'd survived for three years, and most people were only around level 3 then. Those above level 5 were rare. Elena'd fought hard to reach level 5. Human scientists discovered that crystal cores could be used for upgrading about a week after the zombies mutated to level 2. Thanks to her knowledge of what was coming, Sofia had started collecting crystal cores early. One hundred level-1 crystal cores could be turned into one level-2 core, and the same rule applied to upgrading from a level-2 to a level-3 crystal core. Also, crystal cores could later be exchanged for base contribution points. Clearly, crystal cores were super important. Elena took out the grappling hook the system had given her and tested it. The hook, a cool black-silver color, was strapped to her wrist. She fired it at a wall, and it stuck right in. She pulled on the rope, and in a flash, she was pulled towards the wall. It was even cooler and more useful than Spider-Man's web-slinging! She was really happy with it. Chapter 3 The First Side Quest Out of nowhere, a zombie lunged from the side. With a deft flick of her wrist, Elena sent a dart flying. It pierced the zombie's skull cleanly, shattering it, and then zipped back to her. Elena reached into the gooey mess and plucked out a gray crystal core. This was a level-1 crystal core. Crystal cores came in different colors according to their levels. The level-1 ones were gray and tiny, about the size of a small marble. No wonder people initially overlooked them. "Help! Somebody help me!" "Save me, please!" Screams and wails rang out from the surrounding apartment buildings. Looking up, Elena saw more and more buildings swarming with zombies. Some people were even leaping out of the windows in sheer desperation. Sirens blared all around, and the police rushed out, guns at the ready. At this stage, a couple of well-aimed pistol shots to the head could still take down a level-1 zombie. So, the policemen armed with pistols were actually more effective than the newly-awakened metahumans. But the sheer number of zombies was overwhelming, and their rescue efforts were limited. Zephyr City was just a second-tier city, and its special police force was understaffed. Smart folks were already hitting the road, driving like mad towards the neighboring Aurero City, hoping to find a safe haven. Beyond Aurero City lay the capital, Heriton City. But Elena knew better. There was no such thing as a truly safe place anymore. It was 4:15 a.m. Dark clouds gathered overhead, lightning flashed, and thunder roared. Big raindrops started pelting down. The storm had arrived. Elena pulled up her mask and hood, covering herself up snugly. She slipped into an empty store and took out her phone. The screens were bombarded with news, distress calls, and videos all about the zombie crisis. Gone were the days of idol-chasing and entertainment. Every single platform was filled with one thing only: the zombie apocalypse. "Zombie outbreaks have hit countries all over the world! Our whole city is overrun. Lock your doors and windows and wait for rescue! "Right now, Heriton City has the best handle on the zombie situation. All roads leading there are jammed, and there are zombie attacks. Stay home and wait for help! "Our national defense base is setting up a safe zone in the capital, Heriton City. Don't panic when you see zombies. Keep quiet; they track prey by sound. "This is the Zephyr City Police Department. Residents within a 6-mile radius of the A51 Highway can head there. The deputy defense minister has sent special forces and helicopters for rescue." Elena shut off her phone. Her cold, sharp eyes glowed like a wolf's in the dark. She knew better than anyone that barricading oneself at home was a death sentence; food would run out soon. Zombies didn't just rely on sound; they could sense the slightest air movement. And as they mutated, their intelligence and senses would only get keener. The A51 Highway would soon attract hordes of zombies because of the large number of people flocking there. But the deputy defense minister, Vincent Jones, was no pushover. He managed to hold back the zombie tide and rescued most of the people, airlifting them to Heriton City by helicopter. In the early days of the outbreak, the government's response was a bit slow and inaccurate. But with the research from the Research Institute, they gradually got a better grip on the situation. By then, cities far from the capital, Heriton City, were relying on helicopter rescues. The three neighboring cities around Heriton City, Aurero City, Sephra City, and Nicorelo City, were being assisted by armored tanks. The world was on the verge of a complete transformation. A new order was about to emerge. In the future, metahumans with real power would rule. For now, the only way out was to strengthen oneself and survive. Elena's next destination was the gas station. She gunned the engine of her motorcycle and zoomed off towards it. The road was in utter chaos, jammed with cars, zombies, and people scrambling for safety. With remarkable riding skills, she expertly navigated around all sorts of obstacles. The motorcycle roared forward, crushing the zombies under its wheels, and their gore splashed everywhere. But it slid right off her sleek black gear without leaving a single mark. Before long, she reached the gas station. It was obviously overrun, surrounded by about a dozen zombies shuffling around aimlessly. Elena pushed her bike to full throttle and rammed straight into the zombies. Their flesh and blood flew in all directions, but she barely paid them any mind. The blood and flesh slid off her gear and vanished in no time. With her left hand on the handlebars, she used her right to shoot darts, channeling her Lightning Power. In a matter of seconds, all the zombies were taken down. With a flick of her fingers, she stored all the dozen or so level-1 crystal cores in her space. It was all so seamless and effortless. To Elena, these level-1 zombies were no more than a pack of stray dogs, not even worthy of a second glance. "Superwoman!" "Save us!" "Please, help us out!" Desperate pleas for help rang out from the second floor of the gas station. Elena looked up and saw seven or eight middle-aged folks huddled in a room on the second floor, shouting like crazy from the window. Inside the room, a girl in black sportswear was desperately holding the door shut. She was drenched in sweat, her face as pale as a sheet. There were more than a dozen zombies on the other side of the door, scratching and clawing at it like crazy. It was obvious the door wouldn't hold up much longer. "Guys, just jump! The zombies down there are all dead. It's only about 20 feet from the second floor. You'll be okay. Head for the A51 Highway right away!" the girl gritted her teeth and managed to say through the pain. "Shut your mouth! You want us to break our necks jumping down?" the leading middle-aged man snapped back. What cowards, leaving a girl to fend for herself. Elena scoffed silently but didn't say a word. She strode straight into the gas station. Her target was the fuel tank about 20 feet underground. Once she found the location, Elena tapped her fingertips twice, and the whole fuel tank vanished into her space, safely stored in the blue time-frozen area. Upstairs, the sound of zombies scratching at the door and the cries for help continued to ring out. "Beep! A side quest has popped up: Rescue Emily Sinclair. Target location: The girl in black sportswear on the second floor. Side quests are optional, not mandatory. Completing this quest will score you a task reward." A spark flashed in Elena's eyes. "Sure, I'll take it," she said. Stepping out of the gas station slowly, Elena looked up. The middle-aged people were now yelling even louder, scared that she wouldn't come to their rescue. Their shouts only made the zombies behind the door go even more berserk. "Please, save us and we'll fork over two million dollars!" "Name your price, we've got the dough. Our family's in the real-estate game, we're loaded!" Money was worthless now. Elena sneered to herself and didn't bother answering. She pulled out the silver grappling hook and sent it flying through the wall beside the second-floor window. Then, with a graceful leap, she landed inside the window. The middle-aged men and women stared at her with wide-eyed excitement, like she was their knight in shining armor. Some of them were already thanking her in tears. This scene brought back bitter memories for Elena. In her past life, when she was struggling to survive alone in the mall, she'd also had run-ins with her unscrupulous relatives. Her parents, soldiers who'd sacrificed their lives for the country, had left her a fortune. Elena had lived on her own for years, constantly fending off the greedy looks of her relatives. After the apocalypse hit, out of a sense of kinship, she'd saved them. But they'd repaid her by locking her up with a horde of zombies in a store. She'd barely managed to fight her way out. These memories flashed through Elena's mind in an instant. She turned her attention to Emily holding the door alone. Emily's face was etched with fear, but her eyes were filled with determination and a glimmer of hope. ------------------------------------- 👉 Readers' opinions: "It's so intriguing!" 💕 It's really ALL FREE, just click the button below!!!👇
