China’s top dragon boat teams competed in Leshan, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, during the 2026 National Dragon Boat Championship held from May 8 to 10 at Xiaoxi Lake in Wutongqiao District. Dragon boat racing is traditionally associated with the Dragon Boat Festival, one of China’s oldest traditional festivals. In Wutongqiao — known as the “hometown of dragon boat racing” in Sichuan — the tradition has been practiced for more than 300 years and is listed as provincial intangible cultural heritage. Traditional cultural performances, including dragon dances, martial arts and Chinese dance shows, were also staged during the event, adding to the festive atmosphere.
