The note said attic stairs, end of the hall. Don't turn on the light. I took two pills. Drank enough to forget my own name. By the time I climbed those stairs in the dark, I was harder than I'd been in years. I'd come to meet a girl named Kaylee. She'd been sexting me for two weeks. "She came to me. For the record." I hit him across the jaw so hard my knuckles split. His head snaps sideways. Blood blooms from his lower lip — and he laughs. A short, breathless sound. Then he's on his feet and we're tangled in the narrow space between the bathtub and the sink. He catches my second punch and shoves me into the mirror. The glass cracks behind my skull. I drive my knee into his ribs and he folds. He grabs my shirt and pulls me down with him. We hit the tile hard. "There he is." Blood runs down his chin. His eyes are bright, dilated, alive. "I missed this version of you." "Shut your mouth." I slam my fist into his side. He twists underneath me — and that's when I feel it. He has been hard the whole time. He never went down. Now his hips are pressed against mine through denim while I'm pinned on top of him on the bathroom floor. My body responded before my brain could shut it down. His mouth curves into the worst smile I've ever seen. I hit him so hard his head bounces off the tile. Then I shove off him and stagger to my feet and walk out without a word.
