Here’s something Shelburne and South Burlington area residents might not know about me. It changed the course of my life. It's also a BIG reason why I'm committed to paying it forward to the local community. I fell 30 feet off a ski lift! When I was 10, I joined my classmates at a small local mountain, where I learned to use my “pizza” wedge technique. I did that once, grabbed the tow rope, and got pulled up the Bunny Slope. My snow pants got tangled in the rope and there I was dangling over machinery, not too keen on skiing. I went back the next week, and after a few more practice runs, they let me go on the real trail with my brother, who is a year and a half older than me. As we boarded the lift, the attendant gave me a push and I ended up on my brother’s lap. We yelled and screamed, but the roar of the snow-making machines was louder, so nobody stopped the lift. We didn’t know what to do, so he just held me as tightly as he could, maybe half-way up the mountain. One moment I was on the lift and the next I was on the frozen ground staring up at the bottom of people’s skis. I can remember hearing them yell, “are you okay?” One group said, “are you dead?” It’s strange what you remember. Eventually the ski patrol strapped me to the board and stabilized my neck. I can remember thinking how rare it was to be the person being pulled up the hill by a snowmobile. I can still see the lights flashing from inside the ambulance on the way to a hospital somewhere in Pennsylvania. I don’t remember much at the hospital except when they said we could go home. I remember how my parents put me to bed that night, too. The only thing I broke was my glasses. My entire body swelled up, making movement difficult, but it seemed like I was going to be okay. I wasn’t allowed to play basketball for a few weeks, which was tough because I thought I was going to be the next Magic Johnson. My destiny to be 6’9” like my hero came to a screeching halt that night. I’m still not sure that I’ve gotten much taller since that time, but apparently landing straight on my feet from that high up put some major shock through my spine and the rest of my body. For the most part, the rest of my youth was pretty normal. But occasionally, without warning, I’d experience what felt like a full-body spasm, contorting me sideways for several days at a time. Nobody seemed to know why that happened. I was in nearly constant pain for most of my twenties. I could never get comfortable. Driving was terrible. Sitting in school was painful. Yoga hurt. Exercises made things worse. I went to an orthopedist, who took an x-ray of my lower back. It showed some type of damage but they said there wasn’t much they could do about it. When I was in school, I had some neurological tests performed as part of a physical exam class, and the instructors brought all of the other students over to look, because I was the only person who had the problems that were being taught. This led to more x-rays and more special testing but no help. I even had an MRI of my lower back that showed severe damage, especially for someone my age. As a kid, I took an interest in chiropractic when my mom would bring us to her appointments. I liked it so much that I decided to go to chiropractic school, even though I hadn’t been to the chiropractor in more than a decade. When I started getting adjusted, pain wasn’t the first thing to go away, like it is for so many people. My nerves changed first. I was no longer sweating and anxious like I had been for the past 10 years. It was incredible! Then, as time went on, other things in my life started to change. I actually started to heal more fully. My body feels better now in my forties than it did in my twenties. I’d love to pay it forward. I’d like to see others, whether their past includes big injuries or the accumulation of life’s bumps and bruises, see what it’s like to live with such a difference. So often, people indicate that they don’t know why they hurt or how they got to this point with their health. It’s our job to help find out where you are, what led them to be this way, and what we can do to help. That’s why we take our time in our consultation and examinations. That’s why we take x-rays and analyze the situation before we ever recommend a path to help. This brings me to a special invitation: So many people experience neck pain, lower back pain, headaches/migraines, shoulder pain, hip pain and are unsure of what to do or maybe think it might be too difficult to help. We’re committed to helping the local community by offering a complimentary consultation, for you to see if our office is a good fit for you. We are in network with most insurances. Call (802)985-9500 or visit the link below to sign up for an appointment. http://www.vtchiropractors.com Our schedule fills up quickly and we only have a limited number of new patients each month.
