I felt so empty, a shell of myself during menopause it nearly ended my marriage. Only 1 thing saved me and tbh I stumbled on it by chance… Now I NEED to tell as many women as I can about it in case anyone else out there feels the way I did So if this sounds like you then have a quick read because the solution I found could pretty quickly bring your life back and save your marriage… It started about 3 years ago now. Every single day I suddenly felt nothingness. I couldn’t FEEL anything if I wanted to. Its impossible to explain to people that haven’t felt it but im hoping you do if youre feeling this… Tbh for me it was like - somebody could tell me Id won a million quid. And Id have just sat there like….meh okay whatever Or on the other end, my house couldve been literally on fire as I sat on the couch yet i wouldnt have moved a muscle. Idk what you thinks the worst part of menopause for me it was definitely this! Gods sake I could take the night sweats and the terrible sleep lol im a woman Ive been through all that before (Granted the mood swings and the sudden rage for no reason, those were pretty bad too) But this permanent feeling of emptiness? Its like a life sentence Honestly when I think of the months and the years wasted watching my daughter grow up And my husband. Omg my poor Gary what a saint. How the hell he stuck by me when I was acting like a zombie giving him absolutely nothing Its horrendous, its like you KNOW the damage its doing and you even sometimes beg god to just let you care about something Because its not fair on the ones who love you I take it you’ve been to your GP? The less said about mine the better HA! “If you dont laugh, you’d cry” springs to mind… Ive read a lot of reddit threads now on menopause and the overwhelming opinion of GPs in this country is they’re a joke when it comes to this Your lucky if they actually give you the time of day. Most women seem to be treated with a sheer condescending tone and told this is just normal for women our age Its seriously scandalous how little research is put into womens health!! If youre anything like me you were prob put on a round of SSRI’s which really didnt do much, in fact a lot of women say it makes things worse!! Well I found out why SSRI’s are the WRONG thing to prescribe and I’ll tell you why in a second. And btw yes I did try all the different supplements, I think i bought every item in holland n barret! Trust me if theres a ‘solution’ out there I tried it. None of them worked (until i found the one that did). So obviously you then go away and look into it all and HRT seems to be the solution My GP EVENTUALLY put me on it but i know that about 80% of women who should be eligible for HRT arent on it because they’re GP’s are tricky (not all doctors btw very often its due to a legit risk of cancer they cant put you on it) Im interested to hear what your experience of HRT is and if it worked for you if your reading this so please do let me know! I think its important that women can hear from other women because god knows theres not a lot of great information out there I was pretty scared about going on it tbh because Id read a lot of risks but with the way I was feeling I honestly thought it was my last hope Now I could write another post about HRT itself and maybe I will soon but I can sum it up… Mixed results with not much difference in the mental side of things sadly. It probably did help with some of the physical symptoms yeah But it seems a lot of women have the same experience as me and dont find HRT to be be all and end all.. Eventually I came off it and as you can imagine I now felt utterly defeated! Where else could I go from here… Tbh yeah you do have those thoughts where you wonder seriously how you can live like this permanently. Im not really exaggerating when I say I told my husband I simply couldnt have done another 10 years feeling empty and flat (god bless the ladies who go through it for this long) Fortunately for me things changed when I paid privately to see a menopause specialist and got advice that youd never hear from your GP (I’d highly recommend trying for this if its a possibility for you because it might just make all the difference) But I’ll share with you the advice mine told me which started me on the path to being myself again… She asked me if I understood what actually happens in our brain after menopause (thought I did but turns out maybe not!) Well you may already know this but this feeling emotionally numb, like life is meaningless, like a zombie is called “anhedonia”. And my jaw was on the floor as she explained the ‘neurology’ behind it and how no one couldve explained it like this before. Basically, our oestrogen levels plummet as you know. But that doenst mean you cant address the effect that this has after. She said, when oestrogen levels drop what then happens is dopamine starts being re-absorbed quicker. At this point I stupidly asked is that not a good thing? She smiled kindly and said no - you don’t want your dopamine re-absorbed, this means it disappears. Okayyy gotcha She said to think of it like a stream of dopamine in your brain. Then when oestrogen levels drop its as if a bunch of drains appear and the dopamine spills away. “But I thought that’s what HRT is meant to fix? And I went on HRT” I had to ask. She smiled again and this was when I found out why HRT was probably unlikely to be what solved the lack of FEELING i was having Dr Mills showed me how HRT manages SEROTONIN (in my head i thought this was the same as dopamine) and why it means so many women are tackling the wrong issue in the brain. Serotonin = emotion, mood stability etc. But dopamine = what drives motivation, reward, and pleasure ("wanting" as she put it). I’ll never forget the rush of thoughts as so many things seemed to be clicking into place lolit was a rush of excitement as i thought i had a glimmer of hope with this new understanding. Maybe i was one of the ones who’d been treating it wrong the whole time?? So of course I needed to know if there was any way to actually fix this problem of anhedonia. Dr mills said “yes and no.” There’s no cure per se but there is now a lot of research suggesting that a particular natural extract can be used effectively to work on the dopamine in the brain. Its called saffron extract that works on multiple neurotransmitter systems. It slows the breakdown of dopamine, serotonin, and something called norepinephrine. Essentially helping the brain hold onto those happiness 'signals' longer instead of recycling them immediately. And there was something else she mentioned we should know about. Its a specific design that makes it more effective in reaching the brain tissue. Up to 280x more ‘bioavailable’ which means it enters the blood and into the brain. Whys this important? Well it shocked me to find that out that most shelf supplements are absorbed by the liver making them USELESS - you don’t even feel the benefits 99% of the time This is crucial for our problem because it calms the neuroinflammation in the brain that acts like causes the fuzziness in the brain. You'll know what I mean by fuzziness if you've ever felt the mental bluntness I've talked about! Anyhoo. So this is all great. But I was beyond skeptical. I'd tried supplements before. They'd done nothing. But I was curious because she explained it differently than anyone had before. "Regular turmeric for example, can't reach your brain. It breaks down in your liver before it gets there. Whereas this product uses a special coating to cross the blood-brain barrier." "And saffron - real clinical-grade saffron extract - has been tested in countless peer-reviewed trials showing it works as well as SSRIs for mood regulation. But without the emotional blunting." As good as SSRI's did ya say? The way she described it sounded almost too good to be true. Let's fast forward now. I'd been taking this new supplement (she told me the one to get, said compared to all others its 10x as good) I was on week three when something finally shifted in my mental state. I was making dinner and turned up the radio. Not for background noise - because I actually wanted to hear the song. It was small. But it was something. Week six, my daughter came home from school and told me about her day. And I realized I was actually listening. Actually interested. Not just performing interest. Week eight, she made a joke at the dinner table. And I laughed. Not a polite chuckle. A real, unforced roar of laughter. She looked at me with this expression I'll never forget. Surprised. Relieved. "You're different," she said. And I was. The soundproof glass between me and my life had shattered. I wasn't performing anymore. I was there. I could feel the warmth when I hugged my kids. I’ll probably not stop taking this stuff until I know that im out of menopause now tbh. So thats my story and how i managed to save what looked like a doomed marriage and a doomed life> I’ll not get back the 2 years lost as I was so disengaged from everyone but at least I have the future ahead of me to now Im finally able to feel some enjoyment and happiness again with Gary and my daughter Charlotte In case you’re wondering I’ve attached a link to some info on the product the specialist told me to get, the only thing I swear by P.S. I’m not affiliated with them in any way. I need to state here that I dont receive any money from this post because ive been accused of that when i mentioned it in a menopause group on here
