I’ve suffered with cystic acne since I was 9 years old, and every single pimple left a scar. So not only did I have acne prone skin, faulty skin barrier, eczema, but my skin was super prone to scarring. Even the extractions I got done from a facialist on my nose left huge scars. I thought my acne journey would be over once the acne got better. Nope, here was the battle of acne scarring. So for acne scars, I thought, OK the solution is laser treatment. I saved up a few thousand dollars and went to a family friend plastic surgeon to get my skin lasered. I went in ready to get my skin all burnt, and he told me I couldn’t do laser because I have asian skin and a brown undertone, and it could actually make the scarring worse. He recommended microneedling with vitamin C serum instead. I thought putting needles in my face was crazy, but after he said I could do it safely at home, I decided to try it. After working for over 12 years in microneedling devices, I learned that a lot of people are concerned with depth of microneedling vs. the consistency of microneedling. Your skin on your face isn’t thicker than 1.3mm on most people, so using a very long needle isn’t necessary and can induce more trauma. A lot of microneedling is for “show.” People think having more trauma will do more, but if you have skin like me, it’s the opposite. That’s a big reason why I created Banish. I wanted an at home acne scarring treatment that was more safe, affordable, and made for people who are trying to improve their skin without doing the most aggressive thing possible. I still have visible acne scars, and I don’t think any treatment makes them completely go away, but I know they would be much deeper if I hadn’t been microneedling for a decade.
