Chapter 1 Seraphina's pov "I'm sorry, Mrs. Faulchester, but Mr. Faulchester has already deposited $10 million to ensure the child's survival," the doctor said, his voice devoid of any emotion. My eyes widened in bewirldment, though the shock failed to penetrate the numbness that had long overtaken me. For God's sake, I was hemorrhaging, covered in my own blood, pushing out HIS child - and all he cared about was saving the baby? What about me? I tightened my grip on the nurse's hand, forcing myself upright against the headrest, my legs trembling as they parted wider in preparation for another contraction, beads of sweat mingled with the salty sting of tears on my face, though no one could distinguish one from the other. I'd been on this labor bed since last night- over 12 hours of agony. Nurses came and went in shifts, their faces blurring together as I watched my blood wiped away like an inconvenient spill. Each time I felt the wet warmth leaving my body, it felt as though a part of me was slipping away, irretrievably lost. "But does he know?' My voice quivered, barely above a whisper. My nails dug into the nurse's palm, my heart pounding so violently that it felt as though it might give out before the labor did. "Does he know that saving this child risks losing me?" The silence that followed was deafening. The doctors And nurses exchanged looks- furtive, almost apologetic. Embarrassment flooded me, hot and suffocating, as though the air had been stolen from the room. But then again, this was Nathaniel Faulchester. This was the man I msrried- a man who had transformed beyond recognition the moment his late father's business empire exploded into a million-dollar fortune. To him, I was no longer the highschool sweetheart who stood by his side through every hardship, every sleepless night, every failure. I was no longer the woman who had sacrificed everything to see him become the man he is today. Now, I was just a relic of the past. Old. Wrinkled. Unworthy. There's not a hurtful word so cruel and cold he's not thrown my way. Making love to me had become a mechanical chore for Nathaniel, a mere obligation. Meanwhile, I endured the humiliation of watching him bring different women home every night, flaunting his infidelity as if it were a badge of honor. Our matrimonial bed, once a sanctuary, had become a symbol of betrayal. I had to move to the guest room months ago, unable to bear the sight of our sacred space defiled by strangers. When I finally conceived - after years of medical consultations and grim warnings about the risks- I thought this child would be the key to reclaiming his love, his favor, and perhaps a shred of my dignity. How foolish and naive I had been. Desperation had blinded me, driving me to seek his approval and to placate his overbearing mother who had labeled me a failure, a 'barren woman,' incapable of fulfilling my role as a wife. And now, as I lay on this operation table, teetering between life and death, an unshakable dread gripped me. It was clear: Nathaniel wanted me gone. These medical staff were merely his accomplices. Did they not realize the illegality of ther actions? Or perhaps they didn't care. After all, in a world governed by greed, what was the accidental death of a patient when $10 million was at stake? I felt my hands clamp onto the nurse's beside me, but something changed. Their grips tightened around mine, their fingers digging into my skin. A chill ran down my spine as realization dawned- they were restraining me. Short, frantic breaths escaped my lips as panic sef in. My heart thundered in my chest, and my vision blurred with tears as the surgeon approached me. The scalpel in his gloves hand glinted under the harsh surgical lights- I could almost see my horrified eyes in the reflection of the blade. Since I couldn't push, since I wasn't valuable anymore, they were just going to slice me open like a lifeless fish and extract the child. So, this is how it ends? Seraphina Faulchester- the woman who defied her parents to marry the man she loved, endured years of abuse and scorn from his family, and sacrificed everything for his success- was going to die here, discarded like an afterthought. But something stirred within me, a burst of defiance I hadn't felt in years. "Triple!" I rasped, my voice hoarse yet commanding. The room fell silent, all eyes turning to me. "I will pay you triple what he offered." "Mrs. Faulchester..." the doctor began, his tone cautious and impatient. Sick bastard. "Doctor," I interrupted, my voice trembling but resolute, "I am going to be a mother. If you can't save us both, then save me instead. I can bear another." "You can't." His voice was firm, his gaze unwavering, and my heart shattered. The weight of his words hit me like a bullet train. "Your uterus," he continued, "has sustained irreparable damage due to prolonged contractions. The probability of future pregnancies is zero. This child is your only chance.” Tears streamed down my face, unchecked and unapologetic. I didn't care about Shame or dignity at that moment- I cared about surviving. No... Things can't end this way. I can't die like this! "Please," I begged, my voice breaking. "I want to live. I can't die like this. Not after everything that man has put me through!" Even as I spoke, I knew I couldn't trust Nathaniel to care for the child, not in a household plagued by his mistresses and unchecked cruelty. But If I couldn't save us both, I wanted to survive. "Save me instead. Tell him you couldn't save either of us. I'll pay you triple." The doctor hesitated, his gaze flickering with guilt and greed. "That's $30 million," he said finally, his voice laced with disbelief. "I'll pay it," I hissed through gritted teeth. He scoffed, his condescension palpable. "Mrs. Faulchester, everyone knows you as a stay-at-home wife. How could you possibly afford $30 million?" In the midst of the nurses snickering at me, his hand suddenly clamped down on my inner thigh, his eyes gleaming with an impatience and malice that caused my insides to turn. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Faulchester," he said coldly, "but you were never going to survive this anyway." I exhaled sharply, leaning back as I closed my eyes. My voice dropped to a chilling calm. "I'm sorry too, Doctor." As I fling my eyes open, I see the confusion that flickered across his face- but it was too late. Summoning every ounce of strength I had, I swung my leg forward, the kick connecting squarely with his jaw and sending him staggering. The scalpel clattered to the floor. Seizing the moment, I spat the blood I'd been pooling in my mouth into one of the nurse's eyes. She screamed in disgust and pain, staggering back before dropping heavily onto the ground, writhing. Aware of the other nurse restraining me, I caught sight of her fumbling for something with her shaky hand- likely a sedative. Panic surged through me. Turning sharply to my right, I spotted a tray of surgical tools glinting under the harsh light. Without hesitation, I reached out blindly, fingers closing around the sharp edges of a pair of surgical scissors. As the nurse lunged forward with a syringe in hand, I swung with all my might, driving the scissors into her wrist. Her face twisted in agony as she recoiled, a guttural scream escaping her lips. Blood poured from her hand, pooling onto the already crimson-streaked floor. The doctor moved quickly, his actions more precise now, as though he recognized the full scope of the threat I suddenly posed. His steps closed in on me, and my instincts kicked in. I grabbed the metal tray and hurled it at him, disgust twisting my face as it struck him squarely. He staggered backward, colliding with the injured nurse and collapsing to the floor. My eyes started to the door, hope flickering in my chest. I could escape. I would escape. I didn't care if the doctor had lied about my condition- I would deliver this baby myself if I had to. Once free, I'd divorce Nathaniel Faulchester, gain custody of my child, and start a new life. Fueled by desperation, I forced myself off the bed. Agonizing pain ripped through me, but I gritted my teeth, gripping the bedframe for support. My legs wobbled like jelly beneath me, and I let out a loud scream, my blood-streaked face contorted in determination. Survive.. I- I had to... Survive. Blood smeared the floor, thick and abundant as I staggered to the door. Each step was a battle - like I was stepping on shards of glass, my body trembling under the weight of impending collapse. Suddenly, another wave of contractions hit - searing, unbearable. My knees buckled, and I collapsed to the floor, clutching my stomach as agonized screams tore through me. The door creaked open. And there he was. Nathaniel Faulchester. Handsome. Aloof. Immaculate in appearance, yet cloeaked in an aura so vile it made the air around him feel poisonous. His piercing brown eyes locked onto mine, devoid of sympathy or concern. He stepped inside, shutting the door behind him with an ominous malice. "Mr. Faulchester..." the doctor groaned from the floor, blood trickling down his forehead. Nathaniel's face twisted in rage. "Ten million!" he snarled, each word a venomous lash to my heart. "Ten fucking million, and you couldn't handle this? She's pregnant for fuck's sake. Weak and defenseless, yet this wrinkled fool outsmarted you all? It's three against one!" His words sliced through me as he bent down, retrieving the bloodied scalpel from the floor. "You wouldn't... " I rasped, trembling, my voice barely audible over the pounding in my head. My baby fought inside me, the contractions growing stronger, more insistent. Liars! They lied about my condition. I could have delivered this child easily! Nathaniel turned his icy gaze on the doctor, his tone chillingly calm. "The drug you gave her to suppress contractions- clearly, it didn't work. Explain to me why she's about to deliver my child now." Suppress contractions? I suddenly groaned in agony, my nails digging into the blood-slick floor. These bastards- t- they poisoned me, sabotaged my body to kill me and take my child. "Why are you doing this to me?" I sobbed, looking into his eyes, searching for answers in the man I had once loved. "You're not useful to me anymore," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. "But your parents... " he leaned closer, his breath cold against my skin. "Trillionaire Mr. Jackson Silvester and his precious model wife, Jennifer Silvester. Imagine my surprise when I discovered who they were. They're waiting outside, desperate for news of their prodigal daughter. They've even offered full financial support for our child, darling, especially after hearing you wouldn't make it. Their guilt- so deliciously profitable. All I have to do is ensure you don't leave this ward alive, sweet wife." My parents were here? The news hit me like a thunderclap. Hot tears spilled down my cheeks as the truth unraveled easily before me. He had orchestrated everything, even bribing the staff to inject me with that vile drug. He wanted me dead, and he wanted my child solely for the benefit of using her as a pawn in his twisted game. "You will not get away with this, Nathaniel," I whispered, my voice hoarse and filled with venom. A cruel smile spread across his face, and even in my last painful moments, I thought he'd never look more immaculate - so handsome - so evil. "Oh, my darling..." His tone was almost mocking as he raised the scalpel. "...But I already have." The sharp, cold steel pierced the side of my head. A dull, numbing pain spread through me as the world darkened. Nathaniel Faulchester- my husband, my tormenter- had murdered me. It was over. Chapter 2 Seraphina’s pov The air in the doctor's office was sterile and thick, pressing against my lungs like a weight I couldn't quite shake. I, Seraphina Silvester, in full flesh and blood, was staring right at the doctor who had just tried to murder me moments ago- seated just across from me on an office swivel chair. "Congratulations, Mrs. Faulchester. You're pregnant." He said, his voice smooth and professional, a flicker of appraisal in his eyes. "W- what?" The word fell out my lips before I could even stop them. With a smile, he reached for the documents and placed them down Infront of me on the table. It's either he didn't notice or he didn't care to mind that I barely even paid it a single glance. He must have mistook my horrified expression for a shocked one because his smile widened. For some reason, it twisted my gut and had my insides burning in rage. "We conducted a series of tests to ensure... " His words faded into the background as I sank into my seat, eyes wide and unblinking. Sitting rigidly in the chair, all I could process in my thoughts was why this scene - this memory seemed so familiar to me. My stomach churned, and I clutched the armrests tightly, my knuckles white and my mind reeled. This isn't possible. The cold clinical walls. The familiar hum of the air conditioner. The sound of my cries of relief, happiness and shock from when I heard the news of my pregnancy flooded my mind. I sneakily took note of the table calendar on the doctor's table. March 31st, 2024. That's exactly 10 months before Nathaniel Faulchester had murdered me in my larbor ward. And on this same day, I had just gotten the news that I was pregnant. With the same child he stole from me. My burning gaze landed on the doctor again. With the help of his 'accomplices.' To think I had been so happy about the news of my pregnancy, I had almost jumped to hug the doctor, bawling in happiness. "Mrs. Faulchester?" The Doctor, Dr. Cane, leaned forward, brows knitting together in concern. "Are you feeling alright? I've been calling your name for the past minute." I forced a smile, though my teeth grinded against each other as I reached for my purse. "I- I'm fine. Just... too speechless." He nodded, studying me as though I was an insect under a microscope. I resisted the urge to shudder under his malevolent gaze "Your husband will be very glad, I'm sure." My tongue felt heavy as I quickly got up, trembling. I couldn't tell if it was from my anxiousness or excitement. I quickly stuffed the documents into my purse. "I'm sure he will. And please doctor... " I paused in the act of turning to leave. "I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise, so I'd like to break the news to him myself." "Of course.. you... " Without paying him another glance, I exited the office immediately. Left alone, I exhaled sharply, feeling my tears burn my eyes as I clutched my abdomeny to confirm the life growing within. This is my second chance. I won't waste it. I won't fail my baby girl again. My heart thundered as I quickened my steps towards the car that had brought me here. I could still remember every single thing that had happened. The cold, brewing storm in Nathaniel's eyes as he stabbed me would haunt me till my next death. The suffocating darkness, the betrayal. The fading pain. And yet, here I was. Alive. Pregnant. Again. *** The moment I arrived home, I let out a small shaky breath as I stepped into the mansion. The air was thick with the scent of jasmine- my mother-in-law's favorite. She was seated at the exact same spot as I had seen her that day. Wrapped in a luxurious robe, binge watching her favorite show 'Keeping up with the Kardashians' while having a manicurist do her nails. "Finally. You're back! Do you think my son's money grows on trees? Why do you have to use his card regularly? If you can't afford to fuel it, use a damn cab..." Her voice was as sharp as ever, laced with so much hate and malice, I silently reprimanded my past self for ever having to put up with her. "Mother,” I said coolly, briefing her a small smile before turning on my heels, climbing the stairs, directly to Nathaniel's room. Her face, twisted in shock and anger was satisfying but she didn't say anything or try to stop me. As I closed the distance between I and Nathaniel's room, my steps slowed down, and it took everything in me not to break down. That was because I knew where I'd find him. My heart ached as I pushed open the bedroom door just as I did in my past life. Only, this time around, the shock and hurt in my eyes weren't there. Just utter disappointment. There he was, Nathaniel Faulchester, my husband, stark naked in bed, his lips locked with another woman. "Oh yes baby... Yes! Just like that..." Her moans from underneath his body sent off a twinge of rage and irritation in me. How did I ever meet this scene and still tried to break the news to Nathaniel, hoping he'd stop midway and celebrate with me? The awful memory of him throwing a vase at me and yelling at me to get lost while his mother's laughter rang loud downstairs burned in my memory. They will pay. They will all pay. For every pain, hurt, humiliation I've had to go through. They will pay ten folds. "What the hell are you doing here?" Nathaniel's snarling voice cut through me like a whip. I was suddenly brought back to reality, at the mercy of his and his mistress's deadly gaze. However, I didn't flinch. Not this time. I met his gaze full on, my expression calm, even as my chest tightened painfully. "Don't stop on my account," I said, my voice laced with mockery and bitterness as I approached the bed. "I've seen enough." "Get out this instant Seraphina. Are you blind or can't you see I'm with someone?" But I didn't move. Instead, I reached into my purse and pulled out a stack of papers, tossing them onto the bed. "What's this?" He demanded in a harsh voice that shook the room, snatching one of the papers. "Oh.. I forgot your brain is usually foggy when you're cheating. Well, at the top there,” with a wide smile, I point towards the paper like I'm teaching a kindergarten student how to read. “It's written ‘Divorce agreement’ in bold- it's really hard to miss, Nathaniel.” “And if you look a bit further down, you'll see I've already signed it. In clear terms, I'm divorcing you.” The color draining from his face was priceless. Chapter 3 Seraphina's pov As expected of a spineless man with an oversized ego, Nathaniel's face twisted into an ugly mask of rage, his lips curling Into a sneer as he threw the divorce papers onto the floor. "Is this some kind of a joke?" I stepped back, sneering as he boldly climbed out the bed, stark naked. Either way, my eyes were fixed in his, relishing the rage burning inside; exposing the true, vile monster I had faced in that ward. "You know me well enough to know I don't joke like this, Nathaniel." He chuckled, wiping a hand over his face before muffling another laughter, staring at me in sheer mockery and respite. "You think you can just leave me? Just toss the damn papers and waltz out of here? You're delusional, sweetheart." In my past life, I would have swooned at the endearment, but all I wanted to do was throw up. It could be from my nausea, but I just felt sick having to look at him. "I'm leaving Nathaniel. And don't even bother. There's nothing you can say to change my mind." He chuckled again, this time, stepping closer, but I did all I could to stand my ground, feeling my palms turn clammy. "Let me guess... you suddenly realized your self worth and you feel you deserve better, don't you?" The stench of alcohol hit me squarely in the face and I swear I felt the bile rise in my throat. "You really think anyone will put up with you like I do, Seraphina. A washed-up, spineless woman who clings to my wealth like a lifeline?" I smirk humorlessly. "That's too low- even for you, Mr. Faulchester." His frown deepened. "Let me be clear, Seraphina- you leave, and you leave with nothing. Not a penny, not a shred of respect. Sweetheart, you'll be forgotten before the ink on that divorce paper is dry." I clenched my jaws, my hands balling into fists at my sides. "I don't care about your money. I don't need it." "Liar," he hissed, leaning in so close I could FEEL the venom in his breath. "You know it is. Lies. All lies! You wouldn't last a day without me." Right in the middle of our conversation, the woman he'd been entertaining earlier cautiously grabbed him from behind, shamelessly kissing the side of his neck as she moaned. "Nathaniel... This is an opportunity you've probably been yearning for. If she doesn't want- " "Get out. Get out this instant- now!" his voice suddenly rising surprised even me, the harsh tone slicing through the room like a blade. The woman flinched, moving away from him. In shame, she hastily gathered her things under my gaze before scurrying out of the room. The whole time Nathaniel was focused on me, his eyes blazing with a mix of fury and twisted amusement. "You're jealous, aren't you? Just admit it and stop proving stubborn. You're not pretty enough to be acting this way. All these women flocking around me... You can't stand it, can you?" That's why you're pulling this little stunt. My sweetheart just wants some attention." I snorted audibly, although the accusation did well to sting. "Jealous? I'm disgusted. There's a difference.” His laughed was cold and hollow. Like his love for me has always been. "Disgusted? Fine. Let me remind you of what you've missed, sweetheart." Before I could react, he suddenly grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the bed. The air left my lungs as soon as my back slammed heavily onto the bed and he quickly towered over me. "Nathaniel, don't you dare-" I spat, struggling against his grip. He shoved me down, pinning me to the mattress. "You're mine, Seraphina. You'll always be mine!" Adrenaline surged through my veins as I fought back, clawing at his arms and thrashing beneath him. In the background, the door slammed open as Candice, my mother in-law, walked in. "What are you doing to my son, you witch!' When Nathaniel's face loomed too close, I used my chance to slap him hard, the crack of my hand again his cheek echoing in the room. "You bastard!' I screamed, rolling off the bed the chance I got, my chest rising and falling at the effort of my struggle. Without even waiting for an explanation, Candice lunged at me, already fisting her hand to land a blow on my stomach as usual. “How dare you lay your filthy hands on my so- “ I calmly stepped to the side, my face a mask of nonchalance as she slipped and landed straight for the wall. However, it didn't look like Nathaniel had had backed down. He grabbed me by the neck this time and pinned me to one of the bed posts, his grip hard and painful. "If you try to get on with this, I'll make sure you regret it," he snarled, his voice low and menacing. My lips curled into a defiant smile, taunting him. "Go ahead Nathaniel. Hurt me. Assault me again. But know this- when I go to court, I'll make sure the world knows what you are. And when the judge talks half your wealth as my compensation, you'll only have yourself to blame." His grip reluctantly loosened, the weight in my threat probably sinking in as he released me. Free of him, I took a step back, taking note of them both, rewarding me murderous glares. "I'll be waiting for your signature," I said coldly, turning and walking out of the room, my head held high despite the pain radiating through my chest and body. Now in my room, I quickly locked the door and leaned against it, my breaths coming in ragged gasps. I quickly pressed a hand to my mouth, suppressing my cries. Tears blurred my vision as I began hurriedly packing. The scene from earlier came rushing Into my mind- it was almost as if I was being scalded with his warm breath of alcohol and I barely made it to the bathroom before vomiting, my body trembling with exhaustion and relief "I can do this," I reassured myself, my voice shaky as I grabbed my things, leaving the room. "I have to do this." Upon arriving downstairs, ready to have the driver take me away, I was accosted by Nathaniel, now dressed, and Candice, blocking my path at the doorway. "And where do you think you're going?" he asked, his tone mocking. "You can't keep me here," I could feel the house servants’ eyes boring condescending gazes into me from all sides of the living room. "The driver will take me to... " He smirked ruefully. "He's my driver, remember? You don't get to take anything that's mine if you're leaving, sweetheart." Before I could process his words, Candice reached out, snatching the suitcase from my grip, her nails leaving marks on my wrists. I watched, bewirlded as he joined her in ruffling through it and pulling out the clothes inside. "These? Gone." He tossed them onto the floor. "The suitcase as well darling. She could never have afforded it without the help of your credit card." Candice sneered, gazing squarely at me with a smirk that dared me to intervene. "And that ring?" He suddenly reached forward and pulled it from my fingers. "Mine." I had completely forgotten about it. My phone in my hand was suddenly snatched by him as well. At that moment, my grip on my purse tightened, but they knew they couldn't touch it. I had had it with me right from college, a gift from my parents. "The clothes she has on as well..." I stood frozen at Candice's voice, trying to drown out the sickening chuckles and snickers of the servants in the background. "You got that for her as well, remember." My humiliation was mounting with each item they took, and now, as his gaze landed on the sundress I had on, my insides churned with rage and shame. He suddenly approached me, and my heart sank just before he leaned in close, his voice low and menacing. "You have two options sweetheart. Go back inside and forget this divorce nonsense, or walk out of here with nothing - not even your dignity.” Chapter 4 Seraphina's pov I sat at the bar counter, my fingers tracing the rim of a plain glass filled with juice. It was all I could afford to drink, given my condition. Even if I had wanted something stronger to frown my sorrows, I couldn't. The thought of the tiny life growing inside me pulled me back from the brink of recklessness. Another fresh wave of tears flooded my eyes again as my mind kept replaying the events that occured merely hours ago. Nathaniel Faulchester was prepared to send me out of the house stark naked with only my purse hanging on my shoulder. His eyes were cold, much colder than I ever thought they'd be, and them being devoid of any humanity haunted me. I didn't even know if I'd be here if not for the kindness of a maid. Back in my room, sobbing and contemplating what to do, she had sneaked out some clothes and cash for me. She had risked loosing her job for me. I laughed bitterly to myself, though it sounded like a choked sob. Revenge? How could I even dream of getting revenge when I couldn't even afford a place to sleep for the night? My hands clenched tightly around the glass and the tears raced down my cheeks. From the edge of my eyes, the bartender gave me another sympathetic glance- just as the other clubbers who had come to the counter to get some drinks. It drove me seething mad with anger and humiliation. I didn't want their sympathy. My mind wandered to my parents. Even though they warned me against marrying Nathaniel, I had pushed them away- all my friends included. Nathaniel convinced me he was all I needed, and I believed him. But In my past life, I had begged my parents numerous times to take me back after his cruelty had turned unbearable, but they had cut me off completely, clearly aware I had been pregnant too. Their faces, numb and cold flashed in my mind. I closed my eyes and shook my head slightly, pushing the thoughts away. What do I do? Where do I even start from? My heart sank as I felt another wave of tears coming, and I had to lift my eyes to the ceiling, bright neon lights cascading towards my face, stunning my vision for a few seconds. I bit my lip hard trying to suppress the wave of self-loathing. Regrets were normal, but I shouldn't hate myself for doing something I should have done a long time ago. Suddenly, a commotion pulled me out of my thoughts. I dropped my chin, staring around the club. People were leaving the place in droves. Some were forcefully pulled out by the bouncers while most of them were running out the place like they were being chased. In a state of confusion and panic, I got up on my feet, wondering what was going on, but a hand around my wrist forced me to look behind me, meeting the genuine worry in the Bartender's eyes. "Look, you can come stay behind the counter and finish your drink. Just- don't draw attention to yourself." I nodded appreciatively, grabbing hold of my drink before joining him behind the counter, where from the comfort of one of her stools, I watched the place get massacred until it was pretty much empty. Soon enough, some cleaners emerged, probably from the back and began cleaning the place hurriedly and effectively. "What's going on?" I didn't mean to pry, but the Bartender hadn't looked the least shocked so I assumed it was a normal thing. He was wiping some glasses with a small rag as he replied, "The CEO of Monovah's Tech Company is coming here tonight. He's a frequent customer of our club on weekends, but he likes his privacy." I froze. Monovah's Tech Company. One of top 10 largest Trillionaire Company in world, its largest headquarters here in California. My father's Company. My father was coming here? Right now? My throat instantly turned dry despite the fact that I had just taken a sip of my drink. The thought of seeing him after years apart sent my heart racing. However, I couldn't help throwing a worried glance towards the entrance as suited guards began filing in, scanning the room with sharp, calculating gazes. Should I hide? He might not necessarily pay the counter any attention, but who could predict what might happen. I wouldn't even want him to see me in this state. But instead of retreating. I found myself rooted to the spot, my curiosity and longing overpowering my instincts to cower. The doors opened, and in walked... someone else. A man- much, much younger than my father. My brows furrowed, my eyes narrowing. I couldn't have heard wrong. Monovah's Tech company, wasn't it? The man was tall, very tall, and he walked in with an aura that commanded the entire room the moment he entered. His dark tailored suit fit him perfectly, emphasizing his broad shoulders and lean frame. His hair, black as the night, was a tousled mess of dark waves, and his chiseled jawline was accented by a light shadow of stubble. Those eyes- sharp, cold, a predatory green color that sent chills down my spine- scanned the room briefly before he headed for the table reserved for him. This was the first time I was checking another man out other than Nathaniel. That being said, the man was an immaculate embodiment of primal danger and aloofness. He wasn't just handsome; he was magnetic, exuding a dangerous charm that made it hard to look away. I finally noticed the woman that had been hanging onto his arm by the time they both sat across each other. I blinked, my jaw dropping. Celene Dixon. In one of her scanty dresses, leaving nothing to the imagination, South Africa's most famous and the world's too 10 highest paid model was seating a few feet from me, a sultry smile plastered across her face. She was his date I reckon. But I didn't know this man. "That's the CEO?" I couldn't keep the doubt from the tone of my voice, my gaze not leaving the couple. "What happened to Jackson Silvester." The Bartender gave me a strange look. "I guess you've not been around town for a while but you must have seen it in the news. He stepped down... " I almost breathed out a sigh of relief. I thought he had... "His son... Diego Silvester took his place instead. That's him alright." I hadn't even recovered from the shocking news, not until the Bartender dropped another bomb before heading off to serve them drinks, leaving me speechless and frozen to my spot. His son? Father had another child? I looked towards the man again, the scowl that had been on his face from the moment he walked in was still there even as he scrolled through his phone, clearly ignoring Celene who was speaking to him. I swallowed hard, a mix of shock and unease swirling in my chest. Did mother know? Because I'm certain I would have been aware I had a brother. He must be from an illegitimate affair- none I'm surprised of. I'm just still finding it hard to comprehend the fact that this information was kept away from me for this long. For the next hour, I sat there, slowly sipping on my drink and having brief conversations with the Bartender just to stay longer than intended- just to watch them. For the most of it, I could already conclude he was a jerk. The entire time, Celene was trying to get his attention, nagging even, but all he was focused on was his phone, barely touched his drink even. Celene was the tyoe of woman that made men fall on their knees at the sight of her. Diego was good looking - I'll give him that, but what was intriguing was how he was able to make her so bent in getting his attention. Suddenly, my smile dropped. Even in the midst of the guards, no one noticed it. Celene's hand darted towards his bottle of wine, and I watched as a small vial slipped from her sleeve. She carefully poured its content into his glass, stirring it nonchalantly before pushing it towards him. "You've barely even had a sip of your drink. I'm begining to think you agreed on this date just to pacify our mothers." She said, a cruel smirk on her lips which only I noticed. My heart pounded in my chest. I battled with myself. Should I interfere? I had no rights to even be in this club and I could put the Bartender in trouble, but whatever was in that vial caused every instinct in me to want to stop him from drinking that wine. You know what.. he hasn't touched the wine bottle even once. Maybe he wouldn't drink it. "If I drink the stupid wine, will you let me work in peace, Celene?" He suddenly sighed, raising his head so I catch sight of his brilliant green eyes again. Celene smiled, crossing her legs. "Yes." My heart sank, watching as he casually reached for the glass. Before I could think, my body moved on its own. Chapter 5 Diego's pov It was supposed to be simple. I'd pacify both our overbearing mothers by finally taking Celene out. An overpriced dinner, a few obligatory conversations, and then I'd send her back to wherever she came from. She wasn't my type- not that anyone was- but keeping things civil with the daughter of a South African mogul had its advantages. A sigh left my lips as I reached for my glass of wine. I already had enough on my plate to be troubled by her strings of nagging tonight, so anything to keep her docile and mouth sealed for the rest of the night will do. "Wait!" I could barely even register where the sound was coming from before my drink was slapped out of my hand. I was too stunned to even move, only narrowing my eyes at the mess made and the shards of glass scattered across the floor. One moment Celene was whining about having me take a drink and the next, some woman I've never seen before- reeling and trembling- had just slapped my drink out of my hand. What the fuck... My guards already have her bound and to her knees by the time I settle my gaze on her. She was heaving at the effort of her struggles, but her eyes were wide with panic and defiance. Silver streaked blonde hair cascaded down her shoulders, her perfect shade of blue eyes glistening with what were unshed tears- like she had been crying. "She... " She threw a chin towards the woman seated across fron me. "She... " Instantly, Celene got up from her seat and in seconds, crossed the distance between her and the woman and landed a slap across her face. . "Are you insane? How dare you try to cause a commotion? I'll have you fired right this instant!" "Celene... " I sigh warningly, already more tired than pissed off. "She poisoned it! The drink." The woman cried, still struggling. Celene gasped, her face a perfect picture of affronted innocence. "I said it!" She turned to me but I just watched her, eyes narrowed coldly. "I said she was insane!" Celene turned to the guards, visibly trembling in the. "Get her out of here!" I didn't say anything right away, but my gaze went back to the woman kneeling before me. Her eyes met mine again in an intense stare- for someone who's been in the ins and out of business deals and partnerships, I could very well, clearly know when someone was lying to my face. She may be insane. But she was not lying. "Let her go," I ordered, my voice cutting through the tension like a blade. The guards hesitated, glancing at Celene who had already began sobbing from having been 'accused of a horrendous crime’. "If I have to repeat myself, I'll ensure every one of you looses your head tonight." Instantly, they released her, and she staggered slightly as she rose, but stood her ground, even as Celene cornered her again, her shrill voice filling the club. "This is ridiculous, Diego! She's probably some gold digging lunatic trying to scam you! Sh- she's an attention seeker." I didn't even look at the woman again, instead, I leaned forward, my gaze on Celene, my tone calm but icy. "You're saying she's lying?' "Of course she is! Come on baby .. poison? That's crazy." She even chuckled, folding her arms. The woman moved, ready to speak again, but I simply raised a hand to stop her, my gaze not leaving Celene's. "Then prove it," I said, signalling to another guard who reached forward, grabbing hold of another glass and pouring another measure of the wine. "Drink it." The room went silent. Celene's face paled for a split second before she plastered on a weak smile. "Diego, don't be absurd. I don't need to prove myself to a random- " "Drink it," I repeated, my voice sharper now, daring her to argue. "I- I don't feel like drinking anymore," she stammered, taking a step back. I raised a brow. "You were practically begging me to have a drink earlier. What's the problem now?" The tension in the room grew tensed. Just after she rewarded the woman a side glare, she suddenly snapped, "Fine! I'll drink the stupid wine." She grabbed the glass with shaky hands, and a rueful smirk curled up on my lips as I watched her tip it back. As she dropped the glass back down, she glared at every single one of us in the room as we all watched her, the silence thick and tensed. It didn't take long. She started to sway, her breath hitching and her pupils dilated. Her chest heaved, and she stumbled forward, grabbing the edge of the table for support. "I- I can explain." She gasped, her voice slurred the moment I signaled two guards to grab hold of her and drag her towards me. I stood, towering over her. "Start talking." "It was my mother!" She shrieked, shaking her head, her eyes filled with fear on seeing me come close. "It wasn't posion- it was just an aphrodisiac. My mother made me do it! She said it was the only solution to have you get me pregnant and- " she trailed off, her head lolling to the side. I turned to both guards situated on either side of her, fury burning through me. "How could you let this happen? And right under your noses- she dare drug my drink?!' None of them dared meet my eyes. "Get her out of here," I snapped. "Put her on the next flight back to South Africa, and if I see her in this country again, I'll have you all wishing I killed you this instant!" They nodded, and scrambled to obey, dragging Celene away as she moaned incoherently, the effect of the drug taking its toll on her. As soon as they left my sight, I turned to the woman, taking a closer look at her now. She looked exhausted, her shoulders slumped, but there was still that defiance in her eyes. What she did took a lot of guts. And I would have been drugged Into a scandal or an apparent forced marriage if it hadn't been for her. I took note of her dishelved state, her prescence piquing my interest - something that rarely happened. "Do you work here?" I asked. Before she could answer, the bartender rushed over, bowing his head. "No sir... She doesn't. I'm so sorry about this. I didn't mean for her to cause a scene and I take full responsibility for… " "Actually - " the woman finally spoke again, bringing my attention back to her, and I'm intrigued when I see her gaze fixated steadily in mine, unwavering. She hesitates a bit, biting her lip before continuing, "I don't have a job right now. And if it's anyway to thank me for saving your life, I'd appreciate it you could give me one at your company." The Bartender suddenly choked on his own saliva, and the guards around looked mortified, but If anything, I was only more amused. It didn't look like she was done. Her eyes seemed to lit up as she continued. "If it's credentials, then that's not a problem. I majored in business management and marketing. I schooled at the prestigious..." "And your name?" She looked a bit taken aback by the question, but she replied fluidly, not missing a beat. "Seraphina Miller." Seraphina. I'm begining to see why I was growing less and less interested in people as the day progressed. It's because I've not seen anyone as progressively straight to the point and bold as this woman. She seized an opportunity and made good use of it. Without an interview she was casually ticking all the boxes. I reached into my pocket, pulling out one of my cards before handing it to her. The moment she grabbed hold of it, she raised her eyes and our gazes locked in an intense heated stare. "I'll have you tomorrow, Sera. You know where to find me." While she stared at the card like it was a lifeline, her lips already parting in surprise, I signalled my guards and we exited the place. Once we stepped out Into the night air and I got into my Limo, my phone buzzed. On seeing the caller ID, I muttered a curse under my breath before picking up. "Diego," my mother's voice snapped through the line, sharp and unyielding. "Where are you?" "Out," I said, my patience already thinning. "Well, get home. Now." She hung up before I could argue, leaving me to wonder what fire I'd have to put out this time. Chapter 6 Seraphina's pov "And here is your room..." Dalton, the bartender flashed me a small smile as he beckoned me into a small room at the underground basement of the club. The place smelled musty, damp and the room was incredible small. Three people would be a stretch, four people here? No one would probably be able to move. But it barely fazed me. There was a small mattress kept against the wall, looking like it had a thousand bed bugs crawling over it, but I'd choose sleeping on it everyday of my life than to share a comfortable bed with a man who shares it with other women. A rat scurries past, but I pretend I don't notice it and flash Dalton a bright smile. "When can I start? Is tonight fine?" I could see the guilt and pity in his eyes. I wish he knew he was doing me a huge favor. I may have gotten a chance to work at Monovah's, but with nothing but the clothes I had on and my purse with barely 20$ for an Uber, there is no way they'd even let me in for an interview. Desperate, I had turned to Dalton, only letting him know of my recent divorce, withholding my ex's name. Either way, he was bound to see me on the news when Mr. Faulchester publicly divorces me. I didn't trust him well enough to let him know about my pregnancy, but he was already eager to offer me a place at his sister's. She was a law student and her roommate wouldn't mind if I crashed with them for a few days, at least until I got the job. However, I didn't want to feel indebted to anyone. Life under the Faulchesters' roof has taught me to never really rely on people because they could use that to choose to have an upper hand in your crisis later in the future. Instead, I opted to work a part time at the club. Serving tables was something I never thought I'd be doing in a million years, but hey, it got me an accommodation, free drinks and an advance pay suitable to get me some good clothes at a thrift store and breakfast to get me through the day tomorrow. The envelop, sparsely thick with the dollar notes was right in my grip as I stood there, waiting for a response. For some reason, he looked reluctant about saying something. "Look, Miss Miller..." "You can call me Seraphina." I resist visibly wrinkling my nose at the fake surname I had told Diego Silvester in order not to draw suspicion to my identity. "You insisted on doing this, so I'm not going to force you. But you have an interview tomorrow. I suggest you rest up for now. My room is upstairs, if you need anything. Please let me know." I manage a nod. "Sure." I didn't want his pity. Honestly, he keeps looking at me like a fragile doll capable of breaking at the slightest touch. Could he tell I was pregnant? Was that why he was so compassionate towards me? There was no way someone could be so kind to me. Did he perhaps know my actual identity as Jackson Silvester's daughter? As he murmurs something about hot water being available at 10, my eyes narrow as I watch him till he leaves, shutting the door It's when he does, I finally let out a breath I've been holding- a sigh of relief. I shouldn't be paranoid. There's no way he could possibly know. He was right. I had an interview tomorrow, a once in a life one opportunity I wasn't willing on missing. Still shaken by what had just happened, and my near death experience with Diego Silvester, I collapse on the bed, falling into a deep slumber *** "Mr. Silvester is preoccupied, you .." "I've been here for over 6 hours!" Agitated, I resist the urge to snap at the arrogant Secretary who looks anything but apologetic about me waiting in the office for hours now. "If you just tell him..." "Miss." Her voice is cold ridden as she glanced me over, probably judging the cheap chiffon blouse I got from a thrift store along with the palazzo pants and shoes. "When he's less busy, I'll let him know he has an appointment." "You don't believe me do you?" I've watched people come in and walk past me into the CEO's office and walk out later. People who had come much later than me. And she had served them with smiles, even offering coffee. The entire time, she had treated me like a dirty rug staining the interior decor of her office, barely even paying my card a glance when I had shown her the evidence that I was here on an appointment. "I didn't say that." Her smile looked forced and snarky, and I burned with rage and shame. If it hadn't been for the fact that Nathaniel had reduced me to a common housewife because of my foolishness, if I had only followed my father's decision and took after his company, I wouldn't have to be in this situation. I didn't blame the secretary one bit. But she was getting on my nerves. Without bothering to hide it, she was making it obvious that as long as I was here, she planned on frustrating me till I left. What could a cheaply dressed woman with her hair up in a plain ponytail and a face scrubbed clean of makeup but for a lipgloss possibly want to do with Diego Silvester? Me? I had no idea too. But she didn't have the right to treat me this way. She hadn't even informed her CEO of my arrival. And I've watched her walk in and out of that office several times. "Please take a seat and wait. Unlike you, my boss is a very busy man and... What are you doing?!" I could hear the horrific tone in her voice as she calls after me just as I swiped her ID card from her table and head for the CEO's office. "You can't go in there! I just told you he's..." "Busy, right?" I snapped as I turned to her, seeing her a few feet from me now, chest heaving, eyes wide with fear and anger as she glared at me. I flashed her her same snarky smile. "I guess he'll just have to make time for me. Unlike him, I haven't got a single shame in the world." Not anymore. I wasn't planning on letting my former timid self get the better of me and rid me of this opportunity. "Miss Miller!" She finally uses my name, apprehension in her now tight voice but I ignore her as I swipe her ID card against the biometric lock of the door as I had seen her do. My face is morphed Into inpatience and curiosity as I stalk into the office. However, I'm suddenly frozen to my spot, the ID card slipping from my loosened fingers to drop on the floor as I take in the scene before me with disbelief in my eyes. The scent of sex hung thick in the air, the all too well familiar sound of skin slapping against skin echoing through the office. My soon-to-be boss— Diego Silvester — stood behind a woman bent over his desk, his tailored slacks shoved just low enough to expose the cut of his v-line and the powerful thrust of his hips. Unmoving, my eyes obligingly lower, taking every inch of him without realizing. His back, completely inked in dark, intricate tattoos, flexed with every movement, muscles coiled and straining. His head tilted back, damp hair falling over his sweat-slicked forehead, green eyes ablaze as he pounded into the whimpering woman with a raw intensity that suddenly left me breathless just watching. A strange sensation crawled over my body the moment a growl ripped from his throat as his large hands grabbed her hips tighter, forcing her to take him deeper And suddenly, he looked up, and that's when I quickly shut my mouth, my face burning when I realized I was checking him out. Oh. My. God. His piercing green eyes were looking directly into mine now, and I wished the ground would swallow me up at that moment. As if the situation couldn't get any worse, a wicked smirk curled on his lips. He looked completely unfazed. "Seraphina," it felt as though he was tasting every vowel of my name on his lips. A complete stranger casually calling me by my name should not have this much effect on me. "I've been waiting for you."
