I gave my heart to Jesus when I was five years old, so I’ve been a Christ-follower for more than half a century now (which might explain my sudden craving for rocking chairs, hard candy, and early bird dinner specials 😄). Unfortunately, I spent far too long assuming God had “lowered the bar” to let me into His kingdom. I was so ashamed of the abuse I’d experienced as a child and young woman that, despite my faith, I felt dirty and damaged. Therefore, I resolved to be such a “good Christian” that God wouldn’t regret His decision to save me. For decades the mantra of my inner life was “I don’t deserve,” and I danced to the self-destructive rhythm of “I’ve got to do better…be better.” As a result, I almost missed the real miracle we were created for. Thankfully, about 20 years ago, God allowed me to get to the point where I couldn’t carry the emotional weight of my own life anymore, causing the performative legs of my proverbial stool to collapse, and I fell hard into His embrace. I finally began to realize that spiritual maturity is less about accumulating knowledge about God and more about intimacy with Jesus.
