A bowl of strawberries. That was the thing that finally made it click. I was standing in my kitchen, getting myself ready for another summer where I tell myself I'll feel good in my body. Same promise I've made for years. Same diets. Same start-stop-start-stop loop. But this time I figured out something stupidly simple about how to actually stay consistent. The unlock was volume. I started building my plates around volume first instead of calories. If my plate looked full and I felt full, I didn't sabotage myself by 4pm with a sleeve of crackers because I was secretly starving. A bowl of strawberries on the counter. A bigger salad than I would have made before. The same pasta I love, just with twice the vegetables stuffed underneath it. Stupid simple. And the first morning I stepped on the scale and saw it was working, three thoughts came in a row. The first: "I wish I knew this sooner." The second: "I'm going to walk this path now." The third one is the one I want to talk about. The third one was: "this is what I would build a community around if I had to start over from zero." Now, I don't actually have a weight loss community. I run a marketing membership. I teach people how to build memberships and run ads. But for years I've been telling people the same thing. Pick a profitable niche. Validate the offer. Find product market fit. Stack the strategy. Run the ads. And it works. I've built my business doing exactly that. But here's the thing nobody tells you when you start. The most successful version of my business didn't come from picking the most profitable niche. It came from picking the next version of me I wanted to become. Let me back up. A year ago I had a high ticket mastermind. Profitable. Respected. People wanted in. On paper, the dream. It felt like a job. Not a job I hated. Just a job. The kind where Sunday night feels heavier than it should. The kind where you have to drag yourself to the laptop instead of being pulled to it. So I closed it. I closed something that was making good money because I didn't want to keep being the version of me that had to run it. What I wanted was the boring opposite. Small monthly payments from a lot of people. Afternoons with my son. Closing my laptop by 2pm. A business that ran on systems, not on me showing up emotionally for dozens of people every week. So I built that. Not because the market told me to. Because I wanted to become the woman who lived that life. And the strangest thing happened. The work stopped feeling like work. When you build something around who you actually want to become, you stop dragging yourself to your laptop. The work is the becoming. You're already going to do the thing. You're already going to research it. You're already going to obsess over it on a Tuesday at 11pm. You may as well bring people with you and let them pay you to watch. Most people start from the wrong end of the question. They ask: what does the market want. What can I sell. What's the profitable niche. The better question is: who am I becoming next. What am I going to do anyway, with or without an audience. Because that's the thing you can sustain. Right now I'm getting in shape for summer with my volume meals. I'm also teaching myself to vibe code. I'm also learning how to run local AI on my own machine because I think the API costs are coming for us. Three completely different rabbit holes. If I had to start over from zero today, I could build a community around any one of them. Not because I'm the world's expert. Because I'm walking the path. And there are people right behind me who would rather walk with someone two steps ahead of them than someone who did the thing and outgrew it years ago. The accountability of teaching is what makes you actually do the thing. The processing of teaching is what makes you learn it faster. The presence of an audience is what makes the becoming non-negotiable. Pick a version of yourself first. Let the niche be the byproduct. If you've been trying to figure out what to build, what to sell, what your thing should be, and you keep coming up empty, this is probably why. You're asking the market what it wants when you should be asking yourself who you actually want to be in 12 months. What are you doing anyway? What are you reading anyway? What are you obsessing over anyway? That's the community. That's the membership. That's the offer. If you're sitting with that question right now and your next version of you is teaching the thing you'd be doing anyway inside an online membership, I built Grow With Evelyn for exactly this.
