We stopped in front of the chess set. "Do you play?" I asked. "Would you be surprised if I told you I did?" I nodded. "It's not very popular these days. I haven't played since high school myself." "High school?" She moved behind the white pieces, pushed a pawn forward, and started the game without asking. "I didn't think chess was a very popular game among teenagers." "It wasn't." I laughed. "Which is why my English teacher made us learn. Mr. Wright felt it was his duty to pass on the tradition so it wouldn't be lost." I moved a pawn to match hers. "I doubt it would be lost forever," she said. "It's chess, after all. Are you any good?" There was a sparkle in her eye, an implied challenge I didn't miss. "I think I'm pretty good. What about you?" She cocked a hip, sassy and very, very cute. "Good enough. What do you say we make this game interesting?" "I didn't realize we were playing," I teased. "Oh, we're playing." "Game on, then." I laughed. "Winner picks the restaurant for dinner." "Hmm…" She tapped her finger to her lip. "What? The stakes aren't high enough for you?" "Let's just say they're not really very interesting." "Oh?" I wove through the pieces until I stood inches from her. "Do you have any ideas about what would make it more interesting?" She bit her bottom lip and nodded ever so slightly. "I have a few ideas." I swallowed back a growl, slid my hand behind her head, and kissed her right there in the middle of the plaza. Unlike our earlier kisses, this one held the promise of more. I kept my need in check as my tongue slipped between her lips and found hers. She moaned, and I cupped her face, taking as much as I gave. When I finally pulled away, I touched my fingers to my lips, not wanting to lose the taste of her. Annie looked back at me, mouth slightly open, breathing shallow, looking a little stunned. "How about the winner decides how and when we finish what we just started?" I stepped back. "How's that for interesting?" Her mouth closed and curved into a sly grin. "You're on," she said. "I'll make that decision right after I decide where you're taking me for dinner." * Maybe it wasn't fair for me to take the bet, but in my defense, Chase hadn't asked how I knew how to play chess. That's the only reason I hadn't told him that I, too, had played in high school and had been a zone champion my freshman year. So yes, it probably wasn't fair that in only a few moves I dominated the board and put him in a very tight position. "You didn't tell me you were some kind of shark, Annie." "You didn't ask." "I did, too," he protested. "Didn't I?" I shook my head. "But…" I was almost apologetic, but also a little too gleeful as I moved my last piece. "Checkmate." He stared at me for a moment, then shook his head with a chuckle. "You played me." I shrugged and tossed my hair over my shoulder. I was enjoying myself, and it had very little to do with the fact that I'd just about beaten Chase at his own game, although that didn't hurt. Mostly, I was enjoying being dressed up, hair done, a splash of makeup on, and feeling like a woman while I flirted with a very handsome man. For the first time in a long time, I felt like the young woman I was and not a burned-out, stressed-out, overworked, tired mother of a child who wasn't mine. And I liked it.
