SHOWING CHILD GENIUSES: IMAGES FROM 'STILL WE BLOOM', ARTS CURATION/COMPETITION IN LAGOS ******************************************** We are super excited to share photos from our arts event by children drawn from across mostly marginalised communities in Lagos (Makoko, Ajegunle-Ikorodu, Monkey Village, Oke-Ira, Fagba, Irede Island (Lagos) and Mowe and Agbado in Ogun State. It held on Saturday June 13 at CEE-HOPE's House, Agege. The children, numbering about 60 and with ages ranging mostly between 7 to 17 (primary and second school classes) worked on different art forms including oil on canvas, pencil sketches, clay works and others. They utilised their creative expressions to produce impressions of their environments and their dream futures. There were works depicting fishing environments complete with fishing activities like Makoko, others showing football career as a platform to global conquest, sketches of soccer idol, Ronaldo and another depicting current affairs with that of a military officer rescuing a trapped schoolgirl from what appears to be image of death (skull) in the background, clay works mostly of flower vases and other household items and carried out by the youngest children in the group. The Makoko team had an upper creative hands with the most astounding oil on canvas works. The Makoko young artists (both from the waterside and land) include Anthony Archile Bidemi (a well-known child artist), age 17, Femi Kpenje, 17 years, Segun Julius, 15 years, Pascal USA, 17 and Tosin Kusika, 15 years. Inspired and supported by Sophia Eko, a 15-year-old Nigerian-American and an Indiana high school student, 'Still, We Bloom' celebrates creativity, resilience, and the power of believing in children as well as children's aspiration. It was also held in commemoration of the 2026 'International Day Against Child Labour' which held on June 12. The competition took about three hours and was coordinated by artist, Olumide Bello aka Jstar King and his team. The works will be exhibited in the USA to further showcase the children's talents. The project was inspired after Sophia, a talented artist, recently won an award with her pencil sketch work.
