It’s meant to be a beautiful, functional centrepiece - but the island bench can quickly turn into a catch-all for clutter if we’re not intentional. >> Breakfast bar >> Prep space >> Entertaining hub >> Homework and work-from home space >> Casual dining zone >> and where you pop yourself for a chat and a catchup When the sink is located in it … it also becomes a dumping ground for dirty dishes, wet sponges, and splash zones. Now, I know this might be controversial - but after reviewing hundreds of designs and seeing how families actually live in their homes? I don’t recommend putting your sink in your island bench. This isn’t about being precious - it’s about protecting a key part of your kitchen so it can do its job: help you live better in your home. In my experience, when you put a sink in your island bench, you compromise its ability to do all those other functions well. "But I want to keep an eye on everything going on in the house and outside whilst I stand at the sink, Amelia!" Well, as you use your kitchen now, pay attention to how long you stand at the sink vs other zones of your kitchen ... Because in my experience of watching how families use their kitchen (with dishwashers, how we cook, how the family also is in there, and how it functions overall) - we're not spending as much time at the sink as we think we are. So, a sink with a view is not necessarily the answer to creating connection in your kitchen. And even though we see it happen so often in new kitchen designs ... It really does disrupt the amazing and beautiful aesthetic and functional zone a kitchen island bench can be. And as always - it's your choice how you design your kitchen. So, think about what will truly work for you - rather than what everyone automatically does. Have you been planning to put a sink in your island?
