Often when renovating, it can feel natural to start proposing big modifications to your home - especially if it feels dated or disconnected from how you want to live. But older homes can be a bit of a Pandora’s box. Once you start pulling things apart, you may uncover issues that end up consuming a huge portion of your budget - not in the transformation, but in the repair and rectification. And in my experience, renovations don’t always need to be big or drastic to significantly improve the way your home functions and feels. Sometimes it’s as simple as improving how you enter the home - especially if, like many older homes, you walk straight into a living space. Or it’s creating a fantastic covered alfresco area that draws you outside and brings more light and airflow in. In this particular project, we did just that. I designed a defined entry zone and better car accommodation. That allowed us to reposition the entry and create privacy - completely reimagining the front facade simply through the placement and design of the garage and entry. Both the garage and alfresco use skillion roofs over pavilion forms. They ‘float’ above the existing house without disrupting the original roof structure - which keeps costs down, preserves what’s working, and still allows us to expand the experience of the home to the outdoors.
