SEA BUCKTHORN : WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH ACTUALLY SAY? This little orange berry has been studied for quite a few areas of health. Here’s what human research has found: SKIN 12 weeks of Sea Buckthorn oil supplementation has been associated with improvements in skin moisture, elasticity, texture and appearance, along with increased catalase activity EYE HEALTH In a 3-month randomized trial, 2 g/day of Sea Buckthorn oil helped reduce the worsening of tear-film osmolarity and improved some symptoms such as eye redness and burning. #CHOLESTEROL & TRIGLYCERIDES A 2022 meta-analysis of 15 randomized trials found reductions in triglycerides, total cholesterol and LDL, with an increase in HDL. Interestingly, the benefit was mainly seen in people who already had abnormal lipid levels. #INFLAMMATION In a 90-day trial involving 229 healthy adults, Sea Buckthorn berries increased circulating flavonoids such as quercetin and isorhamnetin. Previous analysis of the same intervention reported a reduction in CRP, although this did not translate into improved cholesterol levels in healthy participants. MUCOSAL / VAGINAL HEALTH In 116 postmenopausal women, 3 g/day of Sea Buckthorn oil for 3 months produced significantly better improvement in vaginal epithelial integrity than placebo. ATOPIC DERMATITIS A small 4-month trial found improvement with Sea Buckthorn pulp oil, while seed oil did not produce a statistically significant improvement. So the evidence here is interesting, but far from definitive. BLOOD SUGAR / WEIGHT / BLOOD PRESSURE This is where the hype needs to stop. Evidence has not consistently shown meaningful improvements in blood glucose, BMI or blood pressure. IMMUNITY / COMMON COLD Despite being marketed as an “immunity booster”, a randomized trial of 254 healthy adults found no significant reduction in the number or duration of common-cold infections
