My husband stopped asking me to come back to bed. I don't think he meant anything by it, I think he just got used to me not being there. It started after my second ablation, the varicose veins came back within a few months, same heaviness, same throbbing, and the nights got really bad. By 9pm my legs would start this deep dull ache that no amount of elevating seemed to touch, and I'd ice them, prop them on pillows, pull on my compression socks and try to fall asleep on the couch. Most nights I'd wake up around 1 or 2am with my calves throbbing so hard I'd have to get up and walk around the house for ten minutes just to get the blood moving. After a while I just started sleeping in the guest room so I wouldn't wake him up everytime I got out of bed. It was supposed to be temporary, that was about two years ago. The compression socks were part of the problem honestly, the medical-grade ones my doctor prescribed after the ablation were so tight around my calves that they'd leave deep red marks and make my skin itch by morning. And they only covered below my knee, which never made sense to me because the varicose veins in my thighs were the ones keeping me up at night, and everything above the sock was just on its own. I mentioned the sleep thing at a follow-up with my vascular nurse, not even as a complaint, more like an aside. She said something I hadn't heard before, that alot of her patients with varicose veins that run up the thigh wear full-leg compression to bed, not the medical stockings but softer bamboo sleeves that cover from ankle to thigh. She said the ones who stick with it consistently are the ones who stop calling about night symptoms. She didn't push a brand or write a prescription, it was more of a "you might want to look into it" kind of thing. I almost didn't. But the next night when I was doing the whole routine again (couch, ice, socks, guest room) I looked it up and found a bamboo leg sleeve that covered the full leg, thigh to ankle. I ordered it mostly because I was tired of being tired. When they showed up I didn't know what to think, they're soft, like actually soft, not "medical product that claims to be comfortable" soft. I pulled them on and they felt like long socks you'd actually want to wear, not the tourniquet feeling I'd been dealing with for two years. The bamboo breathes, and the compression is lighter at the top and graduates tighter toward the ankle, which is apparently how it's supposed to work. First night I wore them to bed I woke up at 5:45am, not because of pain but because it was morning. I lay there for a minute trying to figure out what was different before I realized I'd slept through the whole night for the first time in I don't know how long. It wasn't a miracle, the second night I still woke up once, but by the end of the first week I was sleeping through more nights than not, and the throbbing that used to hit around 2am just didn't come. The heaviness was still there some evenings but it was manageable, not the kind that sends you to the couch with ice packs. After about three weeks my husband asked me why I was still in the guest room, not in a confrontational way, he genuinely looked confused, like he'd forgotten why I'd moved in there in the first place. I told him I didn't really have a reason anymore. I moved back that night. I want to be realistic about what these do, they didn't fix my varicose veins, the veins are still there same as before. And on bad days, like if I've been standing all day at work, my legs still ache. But the nightly routine that used to eat an hour of my evening is gone. I pull on the sleeves, get in bed, and sleep. Thats it. They have a 60-day return policy if they don't work for you. For me the first week was enough to know, but I'd been fooled before by things that seemed to help at first so I understand wanting the safety net. Link below.
