“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” James 1:2-4 We have been discussing the new way of living that stems from a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. Our focus has been on the positive changes that the Holy Spirit makes in us. Old things are passed away and all things are made new. Keep in mind, that although we are saved by faith (trusting God), it is God’s will that we take an active part in living out this new life. We are to demonstrate our faith by our actions. In our modern world, patience is a scarce commodity. We want fast food, instant coffee, microwave dinners, lightening fast internet, and overnight delivery. We don’t want to wait for anything. We want it right now. This is the age of instant gratification. There still exists a remnant of patient people. Some of the most enjoyable things are wrought through their efforts. Take for example slow smoked barbeque, specialty cheeses, aged beef, fine wine, not to mention, exquisite works of art and literature. The Bible makes it clear that God is patient. “But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” 1 Peter 3:7-9 Judgment is inevitable, but God is holding back, so that everyone has a chance to repent. Look at the evil running rampant in the world, and consider just how patient He must be. In this life we constantly encounter situations, both trivial and of the gravest magnitude, that test our patience. Our job is, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to learn to persevere. We have to keep our cool and trust God in everything. When we do, we are presented with an amazing promise. “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31
