Housing and mental health care are often treated as separate challenges. For veterans, they rarely are. As communities across the country look for better ways to support veterans, two Chicago organizations, both Make It Better Foundation 2026 Philanthropy Award winners, are demonstrating what a more integrated approach can look like. Rush University’s Road Home Program helps veterans recover from trauma. A Safe Haven Foundation helps them find a place to call home. Together, they’re working to make both easier to access. “What therapists do — help someone come to terms with the past, teach them how to cope with emotions or think differently about themselves — can only really work if a person’s basic needs are met”, says Dr. Brian Klassen, clinical director of the Road Home Program.
