"You ignored me for twelve days." Dean said it as he pulled out the wooden chair across from me and sat down at the library table. He dropped his hockey bag on the floor. He did not smile. He looked tired and angry. Dean Di Laurentis has been my best friend for eight years. We grew up together in New York, and now we are seniors at Briar University. His family has a lot of money, and he is the star player on our hockey team. Dean gets angry easily, especially on the ice. For years, I was the only person who could calm him down when he got into fights. I have clothes in his dresser at his off-campus house. I held his car keys when he went out drinking. His parents treat me like their own daughter. I have also been in love with him the entire time. Dean never noticed. He always acted like I belonged to him, but he never wanted me as a girlfriend. He dates and hooks up with other girls constantly. Two weeks ago, I hit my limit. I was at his house on a Sunday morning, making breakfast before my gymnastics practice. A girl I had never seen before walked out of his bedroom wearing his hockey jersey. She asked me where he kept the coffee cups. A minute later, Dean came into the kitchen, kissed the top of my head, and ate a piece of my toast. He did not introduce the girl. He acted like this was completely normal. Watching other girls leave his bedroom always hurt, but that morning I realized I could not take it anymore. We graduate in four months. I am applying to medical schools in different cities, and he will play professional hockey. I knew I needed to step away now, before graduation made it harder. So I walked out of his house and stopped answering his calls. Now he was sitting in front of me in the library, looking at my chemistry notes. "Twelve days, Grace," Dean said. "You missed Sunday breakfast with the team. You did not come to the game against Harvard on Friday. And this morning, Allie came to the house to get your laundry instead of you." He sounded hurt, but he also sounded offended. "I asked Allie what was going on," he said. "She told me to ask you. So I'm asking you. What is this?" "I'm busy, Dean," I said. "I have medical school applications. I have practice. I have exams." "You always have exams," he said. He leaned closer. "You have never missed a home game in four years. Not one. You didn't even text me after we won on Friday." "You won," I said. "You didn't need a text from me." "I hated that game," he said. "I kept looking at your empty seat behind the bench. It threw off my whole game. Garrett asked me during the second period if we were fighting. I told him no, because I didn't know what I did to make you mad." Dean always expects things to go his way. He wants to hook up with someone on Saturday night, and he still expects me in the stands on Friday. He wants me to listen to him complain about his coach, rub his shoulders when he is sore, and keep his life steady. He does not think he is being selfish. He just thinks that is our friendship. "You didn't do anything specific," I told him. "I just need some space." "Space for what?" he asked. His voice got louder. A student at the next table looked over, but Dean ignored them. "We don't take space from each other, Grace. We have four months left before college ends. Why are you running away from me?" "Because I can't keep doing this," I said. "Doing what?" He gripped the table. "Eating breakfast with me? Answering my calls? Let me know what I did. If I said something stupid, yell at me. But do not just cut me off. You can't act like eight years meant nothing." "They meant everything to me," I said. "Then talk to me," he said. Dean puts both hands over my open textbook. He leans in close. "Just tell me what I did so I can fix it." You decide what happens next. #interactivestory #sagaland
