"I won't touch you until you ask." Roman said it as he stood at the foot of the bed, holding out my sketchbook. I woke up twenty minutes ago locked in this bedroom. My phone was gone. Yesterday evening, two of his men forced me into a car outside my apartment in Florence and drove me to this seaside estate. Now Roman Moretti, the head of the city's biggest crime family, was standing in front of me with breakfast and my drawings. I met Roman three weeks ago at the art gallery where I worked. Most people in Florence know his name and stay out of his way. I did not care about his money or his reputation. When he blocked the hallway during an opening, I asked him to move so I could carry a tray of glasses past him. His cousin laughed, but Roman just stared at me. He looked surprised. No one in the room had ever said no to him. After that night, he came back to the gallery every week. He bought three paintings he did not even look at. He asked me to dinner three times, and I turned him down every time. I am an American student with one month left on my visa. I want to finish my classes and go home to Boston. I did not want anything to do with a crime boss. "Take the book," Roman said. He set it on the nightstand when I did not move. Then he set a tray of coffee and toast on the table. "You left it by your easel." "Where is my phone?" I asked. My voice was shaking, but I stayed in bed and pulled the blanket tighter. "You had your men grab me off the street. You locked me in here." "I did," Roman said. He did not raise his voice. "I brought you here so we could talk without anyone getting in the way. I want you to know me. Not what the papers say about my family, but the real me." "You kidnapped me," I said. "You took my phone and locked the door. That is not talking. That is control." "I gave you my word," he said. "I told myself I would never force you into anything. I want you to choose me." "You cannot kidnap someone and ask them to love you," I told him. "If you lock the door, every kind thing you do is just a threat." Roman went quiet. He looked down at the floor, and his shoulders dropped. For three weeks, I had only seen him look calm and powerful. Now he looked tired and unsure of himself. "I don't know how to do this," he said quietly. "Since I took over the family, people only do what I say because they are afraid or because I pay them. When you told me to move at the gallery, you did not care about my name. You treated me like a normal person." He looked back at me. "Then my men told me you bought a plane ticket back to America for next month. I panicked. I knew if you left, I would never see you again. I thought if I brought you here, you might see that I am not just a criminal." He sounded completely honest, and that confused me. It would have been easy to hate him if he yelled or threatened me. Instead, he was admitting he was lonely and scared of losing me. Part of me wanted to comfort him, and I hated that. He had still taken me off the street. Roman sets my passport on the table and unlocks the door to the driveway. He looks at me, tense and quiet. "The car can take you to the airport," he says. "Or you can stay and have breakfast with me." You decide what happens next. #interactivestory #sagaland
