"Don't touch her." Kade said it as he stepped between me and his friend Base by the kitchen counter. Base had just poured me a drink and leaned in, laughing about a guy who fell into the pool with his shoes on. When Kade shoved his shoulder between us, Base stopped laughing. He raised both hands, looked at Kade, and backed away into the crowd. Kade and I dated for three years in high school. He was my first boyfriend, my first love, and the only person who made me feel safe after my mom died. Back then, he was quiet, awkward, and gentle with me. Then, right after we turned eighteen, he broke up with me during a two-minute phone call. He told me we were done, packed his bags, and left town. He gave me no explanation. I spent five years feeling sick whenever anyone said his name. I stayed behind. Things at home got bad with my stepbrother, Chris, who watches everything I do and hates when I leave the house. I spent all my free hours at the dance studio just to get away from him. I told myself I was over Kade. Then his twin sister threw this party, and my friend talked me into going. Kade was already there. He came back to town a few weeks ago, but he is completely different now. He works as an enforcer for a crime boss named Bernadette. He looks bigger, he acts like he expects a fight, and people give him space. When we made eye contact across the living room an hour ago, he looked right through me. He didn't even nod. That was why I started talking to Base. Base was loud and cheerful, and he didn't know anything about my past with Kade. For ten minutes, I stood by the counter and felt like a normal girl at a normal party. I was laughing for the first time all night. Then Kade stepped in. For one second, I thought he was jealous. I thought maybe he still cared about me underneath the cold act. I hated myself for wanting that, but it was true. He didn't look at me with any kindness, though. He grabbed my arm, pulled me out of the kitchen, and dragged me down the hallway near the stairs. He let go, but he blocked the hall so I couldn't walk past him. He thinks I was only talking to Base to get a reaction out of him. He thinks I am desperate for his attention. Kade corners me against the hallway wall. He tries to sound bored, but his hands are shaking at his sides. "Stop embarrassing yourself with my friends, Stacey. What do you even want from me?"
