"Tutor me, or your best friend pays." Nathan Scott dropped a folded sheet of paper onto the counter of Karen's Cafe. I picked it up and opened it. It was a progress report from Tree Hill High. A big red F was circled next to Chemistry. Nathan is Lucas Scott's half-brother. They share the same father, Dan Scott, but Dan abandoned Lucas and his mom before Lucas was born. Dan raised Nathan with money and spent years pushing him to be the star of the high school basketball team. Nathan grew up arrogant and mean. Lucas grew up playing pickup games at the river court with me cheering from the bench. We have been best friends our whole lives. Two days ago, Coach Whitey gave Lucas a spot on the varsity team. Nathan hated that. He thinks the team belongs to him. Since the first practice, Nathan has shoved Lucas into the bleachers, hit him with hard fouls, and called him trash in the halls. I tossed the paper back at Nathan. "Find someone else. I'm not helping you." Nathan didn't move. He told me that if I refused, he would make practice a nightmare for Lucas every single day until Lucas quit. He said he would make sure Lucas got hurt. I told him he was pathetic. But Nathan didn't smirk. He looked over his shoulder toward the door, then leaned closer. He told me Coach Whitey will bench him from the team if he fails Chemistry. If he gets benched, his father will find out. Dan does not tolerate failure. Nathan's voice dropped when he said his father's name. For a second, he looked scared. Then his face went cold again. He warned me that Lucas could never know about this. If I agreed to tutor him, it had to stay completely secret. He said if Lucas found out he was failing and begging me for help, the deal was off, and he would take it out on Lucas twice as hard. I looked down at the failing grade. Part of me wanted to take the deal. If I tutored Nathan, I could make him leave Lucas alone on the court. I could protect my best friend from getting hurt. But keeping secrets from Lucas felt like a betrayal. Lucas tells me everything, and Nathan is the person who treats him the worst. A car pulled into the gravel lot outside. Lucas parked right by the front window. Nathan leans across the counter, waiting for my answer. Through the window, Lucas gets out of his car and heads for the door. You decide what happens next. #interactivestory #sagaland
