These are also the skills that allow them to regulate their emotions and adjust to unexpected events. In other words, they need to have strong EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING skills. Here's what school can be like for a kid who doesn’t have strong executive functioning skills: You sit down to do your homework and you can’t remember where you put your book. After rummaging in your bag, you realized you left it at school. You try the next assignment, but it’s a writing prompt and all the steps feel too overwhelming, and since you’re already behind you decide you might as well give up because you’ve already got so many missing assignments already. You show up to your first class unprepared, and the list of missing assignments keeps growing. When you go to the cafeteria for lunch, you notice that they’ve rearranged things and you can’t find the meal you usually have, and you’re not sure where to go for help; so you don’t eat anything. Now you’re getting really angry (and hungry). You snap at your friend as soon as you get to the lunch table. You thought they were teasing you, but they were really just joking around; but now they really ARE upset with you. The cycle continues all afternoon, and you know that you’re going to be in trouble this weekend when your parents find out about all your missing assignments. It doesn’t matter how many rewards or punishments you give this child in this situation… They won't be able to hold it together if you don’t teach them the executive functioning skills they need to be successful. That’s why professionals supporting kids need real strategies to provide this support across the day, and this is a TEAM effort.
