The California condor definitely looks like a goth bird. And yes, many people associate scavenger birds with death. To be fair, it does feed on decaying carcasses (carrion). But in Yurok tradition, especially in the creation stories surrounding their World Renewal Ceremony, the condor is seen as pure and sweet. Why? Because it feeds on what’s already passed, it isn’t responsible for bringing death into the world. The wisdom of Indigenous cultures cannot be overstated. They have lived in relationship with the natural world for countless generations. They observe. They remember. They know. For many years, the Yurok Tribe has carefully bred and released this bald beauty. And today, we are honored to support the Nez Perce Tribe as they begin their own condor restoration program, one that aims to return these extraordinary birds to Hells Canyon, part of their ancestral range. For both nations, the return of the condor is the return of a relationship. A living reminder of identity, history, and balance.
