The vast majority of people I see with chronic anxiety had childhood trauma, AND they say they don't remember much about their childhoods. Here I offer an explanation for these observations based on my background in developmental psychology, neuroscience and my doctorate in medicine. But also from feeling human being who also had limited recall of my own childhood. Some of this is speculative, but it's speculation based on countless patient experiences and also my own traumatic childhood. I LOVE being able to relate emotional and psychological processes of real live patients to cognitive neuroscience. I find people feel much better when they know what is happening inside their minds and bodies is NORMAL, and they are not "broken". In fact their nervous system adapted in the very best way it could to protect them. Trauma is not so much the events that happened. Much of what we call "Trauma" is actually a defensive accommodation of the mind and body to that traumatic event. In other words, it's not what happened: it's your mind and body's ACCOMMODATION and ADAPTATION to the event that stays with us. As an example, COMPULSIVE WORRY is an accommodation to a situation in your childhood that you had no control over, so your mind adopts a protective stance of WARNING you of every possible threat you might face. In the protective accommodation lies the ongoing pain. It's also CRITICAL to understand that if you don't remember much of your childhood, THAT DOES NOT MEAN YOU WERE TRAUMATIZED! Like all aspects of humans, the ability to remember things occurs on a continuum with some people having exceptional memory ability and others, not so much.... Thanks for letting me NERD OUT!
