Hidden’ signs of someone who may be struggling with OCD ❤️ The way the media portrays OCD, people think it’s all about hand washing, checking doors and cleaning but that doesn’t even cover the tip of it. OCD isn’t something that’s enjoyed. If you enjoy it, it’s not OCD. OCD can become very debilitating for most people who have it, and can take over a person’s life if left untreated for many. I want to bring to light the more ‘hidden’ signs people may struggle with. OCD is characterised by obsessions and compulsions. Compulsions can be either physical (like checking) or mental (these compulsions are done mentally so they’re invisible to the outside world). Mental compulsions include things like ruminating, checking your thoughts and feelings, counting, self-reassurance, mentally reviewing past events, avoidance, engaging in certain rituals, analysing your thoughts etc etc.. Physical and mental compulsions can take up hours a day or even the whole day. For me, mental compulsions took up most of my days for years! It’s important to talk about the very real aspects of OCD. People who have OCD do these compulsions because of the nature of OCD being egodystonic, which means we have intrusive thoughts that are not according to our values that cause severe distress. Compulsions are done to alleviate the anxiety and distress the person feels. OCD is a cycle of obsessions and compulsions that can feel impossible to stop and it can feel like you’re completely trapped. If you’re struggling with OCD, please speak up and get the help you need. Don’t suffer in silence! OCD is very treatable and you can live a very happy and fulfilling life and fulfil all your dreams whilst also co-existing with OCD. I never believed it but it’s true ❤️ #ocd#ocdrecovery #ocdawareness #pureocd #pureocdrecovery #pureocdawareness #rocd #soocd #harmocd #pocd #scrupulosity #postpartumocd #therapy #rumination #compulsion #acceptance #ocdsupport #ocdhelp #ocdadvocate #ocdproblems #ocdlife #pureo #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #anxiety #intrusivethoughts #ocdisnotanadjective #ocdisnotajoke #youarenotalone
