False memory OCD ❤️ An OCD subtype which involves intrusive thoughts & doubts followed by compulsive behaviours regarding a past event in a person’s life. It involves unwanted thoughts about a past event, and although there may be no evidence that it’s true, they’re convinced that they must’ve done something wrong, otherwise they wouldn’t be having these thoughts / doubts. 🌸 My experience with false memory OCD was in my early 20’s at uni. I was going out and drinking at parties. I was in a committed relationship and I remember having a terrible time the mornings after I’d been out drinking. I would try and remember every single detail of the night, and of course some bits were blurry because of the alcohol. I’d spend hours ruminating, trying to figure out if I had cheated on my then partner. For the record, I have never cheated on a past boyfriend (I’m married now lol) so I can see why this particular thought would trouble me. OCD is egodystonic, it targets things we’re scared of and don’t align with our values💚 Another experience I had with false memory OCD is linked with hit and run OCD. I’d get home from a long drive and suddenly thoughts would come rushing “did I hit someone when I drove down the country lanes?” “Did I hit a rabbit and can’t remember?” These past events can seem so real. I’ve had flash backs of images/ events that haven’t happened. It’s like a snippet from a movie but it’s not even real! I’m sure this isn’t uncommon, but people with OCD struggle because these thoughts become very sticky. Remember to treat false memories like you would any other theme! Try not to go down the path of rumination. The more we check and try to solve by doing compulsions, the more we get stuck and the more doubtful we become. Stick to your exposures and reduce / resist compulsions 💜 #ocd#ocdrecovery #ocdawareness #pureocd #pureocdrecovery #pureocdawareness #rocd #soocd #harmocd #pocd #scrupulosity #postpartumocd #therapy #rumination #compulsion #acceptance #ocdsupport #ocdhelp #ocdadvocate #ocdproblems #ocdlife #pureo #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #anxiety #intrusivethoughts #ocdisnotanadjective #ocdisnotajoke #youarenotalone
