To Feel Without Reacting A Path to Peace and Joy By Sam Yau Foreword: This poem arises from the insight that our suffering is sustained not only by what happens to us, but by how we habitually react to the sensations those experiences awaken in the body. Through mindful observation, we can learn to feel without reacting, allowing old patterns of fear, anger, and craving to soften and pass. What remains, beneath these conditioned reactions, is our deeper nature: peace, joy, and love. Begin with almost nothing: breath at the threshold, so soft a busy life would miss it— where stillness first speaks. Here the body makes the mind visible. Between thought and emotion, there is sensation: tingling fields, hollows of ache, stones of heaviness, streams under the skin, old knots tied in forgotten days. What seemed solid begins to shimmer. So much of life is this ancient reflex: reaching for what pleases, turning from what burns, the hand toward honey, the hand away from flame. The body feels. The mind calls it self. What is not fully felt does not disappear. It waits. It gathers. Grief settles in the shoulders. Anger hardens in the jaw. Sorrow sinks like silt to the floor of the heart. The body keeps what the mind could not bear, like fuel in a hidden tank. So a small spark finds a dry forest: a word, a glance, a memory— buried embers wake. One hurt meets another’s tinder. Flame answers flame. What might have passed becomes a night of burning. More embers from that fight wait in the dark for another spark. Yet there is another way: not to pour out the fire, not to lock it away, but to sit in its presence, neither fleeing nor feeding it; to feel pain as pain, warmth as warmth— pulsing, burning, sweetness, sting— and build no throne for one and no prison for the other. Only this: the courage to remain still, to keep feeling. Then old knots begin to loosen: the familiar ache softens, the heaviness in the chest breaks into fading pulses, heat thins into air. What seemed fixed begins to flicker. What seemed solid begins to dissolve. The body teaches what all things know: nothing stays when fully felt. When nothing is grasped and nothing is avoided, the mind grows quiet and spacious, the body still and light, as if a great weight has lifted. And when it passes, another layer comes: an older bruise, a harder place, a storm not yet emptied. So the work continues— not as failure, but as deeper healing. The river meets stone, goes around it, returns, and over time even stone learns to yield. To feel without reacting is the path. In that stillness, old pain rises and spends itself. What is not resisted softens. What is not fed fades. Layer by layer, the fuel drains. The hidden fire grows thin. The storms lose force. The heart grows clear. What remains when reactivity ends is our true nature: peace that does not depend, joy that does not break, love that does not ask. The body reveals this to the patient heart: that beneath all wounds, beneath all weather, beneath all becoming, we were sky from the beginning.
