PHYSICALISM MAKES CHRIST A LIAR & RUINS THE GOSPEL The Rethinking Hell & Christ movement (Chris Date, Glenn Peoples, & the late Edward Fudge) and the Adventist tradition (ex: Norman Gulley) make Jesus Christ out to be a liar and denies the power of the gospel to give everlasting life right now to believers. The physicalism false gospel teaches that you do not have everlasting life now when you believe in Jesus Christ. Take for example the words from one of the earliest leaders of the Rethinking Hell ministry (www.rethinkinghell.com) Dr. Glenn Peoples, who has taught this: "We have eternal life in the sense that something is going to happen in the future" (Peoples, Material Salvation, Episode 056, 44:30 mark). He added for clarity, "you do not have it now" (47:54 mark). Not only does a believer not have everlasting life now in this demonic worldview, but nothing actually changes inside the person. All the biblical teachings about a new heart, regeneration, an inward change in a person from the washing of regeneration is annihilated in this heretical teaching. Dr. Peoples added further: "Being saved, being a child of God is about present promises of future realities. I cannot walk around as a Christian and say I am something different. . . . If we are physical creatures then of course that is not how it works" (48:05 to 49:25 mark). This is the so-called good news of physicalism that Peoples, Fudge, Date, Gulley, and all physicalists in general promote. This makes Jesus out to be a liar and the power of the gospel right now insufficient. Those teaching this ought to be ashamed of themselves, and if not because of demonic deception they would be. JESUS CHRIST & HIS PROMISE OF BELIEVERS NEVER DYING Jesus, in contrast to these physicalist-annihilation teachers, made a great promise of this: "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live even if he dies, and the one who lives and believes in me will never die" (John 11:25, NET). Dr. Gary Burge rightly explains that here Jesus has taught us that "the resurrection life is a present experience! Eternal life begins now for the person who trusts in Christ . . . . the horror of death is gone" (Evangelical Commentary on the Bible, ed. Walter A. Elwell, p. 864). Physicalists are NOT evangelical gospel believers. They undermine Jesus' promise and the power of the gospel (Rom. 1:16). In physicalism one can have faith in Christ, lose all life at the moment of death, and cease to exist. What horrible news! There is no gain in death for a believer. He or she actually loses what life one has because belief in Christ gives no everlasting life now. But Jesus said that though one dies now (the flesh) that he will never die (personhood, soul, essence) because of being in union with Jesus who is the resurrection. Apostle Paul believed that to die now in Christ is a gain (Phil. 1:21). If the corrupt idea of physicalism were true that would mean death is a loss because what life one does have here and now is eradicated in death until the future time of resurrection. Physicalists promote a different Jesus and a different gospel. Their view of who Jesus is and what he does in saving sinners is now the Jesus and the gospel that orthodox Bible believers affirm. THE DANGER OF PRACTICAL APPLICATION To make this personal and practical, what if Chris Date, or Glenn Peoples, or Norman Gulley or some other living physicalist minister were overseeing the hospice care and then funeral services of your loved one? As that person you love slowly moves toward death that minister has no current hope for that person. That physicalist minister cannot offer words to comfort that believer as he or she nears death. The physicalist minister cannot share how that believer is about to see Jesus, angels, prior departed loved ones, and how he or she will gain new life in heaven now. His ministry is not the ministry of the Christian gospel. Then, when that poor soul who has been abused and robbed by this doctrine of demons from a corrupted minister that has no words of hope, upon death the family of that loved one must then also experience ministerial deception and abuse during the time of the funeral. Their loved one is gone, eradicated from the universe, no more, and simply non-existent. The physicalist minister cannot encourage the believers to ponder about the joy, activity, and glorious life of their loved one in heaven with Jesus now because that believer has suffered a total loss of life even though he or she was a believer. What a shame and disgrace! Physicalist-annihilationists are not a part of the historic communion of the saints. Dr. John W. Cooper said it correctly when he said, "continuing personal existence until the resurrection is an integral phase of salvation history" (Absent from the Body. . . Present with the Lord, in Christian Physicalism?, eds. R. Keith Loftin & John R. Farris, p. 321). CONCLUSION: TO FEAR OR NOT TO FEAR DEATH Pastor C.H. Spurgeon stated that as believers we have a great hope NOW when we die in Christ. Unlike this demonic doctrine from these corrupted physicalists who promote a false Jesus, gospel, believers can have no fear of death now. Spurgeon said: "to die forgiven, 'accepted in the beloved,' is not really to die, but to depart out of this world unto the Father. . . . Death to the believer is not an execution, it is his deliverance, his manumission, and admission into the glory of God. Christ has taken away the fear of death from those who truly know him by assuring us that our soul shall not die or become extinct. There is a vital principle within us, as {Jesus} said, 'Because I live, ye shall live also' . . . . 'To be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord,' is the divine revelation concerning all who are in Christ Jesus by a living faith; because our souls shall never die, we are not afraid to venture into the world of spirits" (Spurgeon's Expository Encyclopedia, Vol. 6:194-195). Sadly, physicalist-annihilationists embrace the wrong Jesus, the wrong view of man, and then those wrong views impact the power of their gospel. Take for example the hopeless and depressing words from the physicalist minister Chris Date. Because he has the wrong view of Christ who he wrongly thinks ceased to live in his human soul during his 3 days of death, Date also thinks he too will cease to exist as a living person when his flesh dies. From a social media post Date described his sad view of afterlife as a physicalist. He stated, "I've thought about my own eventual demise . . . . Because I am an anthropological physicalist, I anticipate no longer being conscious after I die. I'll be gone. Kaput. No more." Could you imagine this minister trying to give you hope during the time of death? How sad, sorry, and shameful. What a sad deception he has embraced by being led astray by demonic doctrine. This heresy is a matter of first importance. It is not a secondary doctrinal difference. When the Jesus you worship supposedly ceases to have any human conscious awareness when the flesh dies this wrong view of Jesus leads to a wrong view of one's own personal death as it undermines the glory, hope, and promise of the gospel Jesus gave to his believers. This is why historically the mature Bible believers and ministers of the gospel did not partner with and associate with Seventh Day Adventists. As Dr. Cooper said, the "Christian tradition has always held the view" that we humans have souls and as believers when "we die we go to be with the Lord." This is as he noted, a "fundamental belief." Sadly, false teachers like Glenn Peoples, Chris Date, Norman Gulley, the late Edward Fudge (a father to the modern annihilation movement), and other physicalists reject this fundamental of the Christian faith. Physicalism is not a view within the boundaries of historic biblical orthodoxy. One might as well partner with a Jehovah Witness or Mormon or some other false religious organization if one partners with and accepts the physicalists into communion. The physicalist's view of Jesus, life, death, and the impact of the gospel differ drastically from historic orthodox Christianity.
