Mandi King by Smash Studios Designing a space that reflects a culture requires a delicate balance. Lean too heavily on recognizable motifs, and the result can feel like imitation rather than interpretation. Strip those references away entirely, and the space risks losing its identity, becoming generic and disconnected from its roots. This was the challenge faced by Shaik Sohail, Snehitha Reddy, and Anish Noone, co-founders of Smash Studios, when they were commissioned to design a 2,900-square-foot outlet for the Mandi restaurant chain in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh. Rather than recreating traditional Arabic aesthetics through overt symbols and decorative clichés, the team sought a more nuanced approach. "Our intention wasn't to replicate Arabic design elements literally," the designers explain. "We wanted to capture the spirit behind them." The project ultimately became an exercise in distillation translating the essence of a rich cultural heritage into a contemporary spatial language that feels both authentic and enduring.
