In 22 years as a behavioural therapist, I've never written something like this. But after losing my third patient this year to a vape-related cardiac event, I can't stay quiet anymore. I'm Dr. Sarah Hennessey. Behavioural therapist. Former NHS Stop Smoking Service lead clinician for Greater Manchester. 22 years in this field. I've helped over 4,000 people quit smoking. And in the last 18 months, I've watched something terrifying happen to my vape patients that I need every single one of you to understand. The patches are not working. The gum is not working. The NHS quit-vaping advice is — and I am choosing my words carefully here — fundamentally wrong about what vaping addiction actually is. Here's what 22 years of clinical practice has taught me, and what the public health bodies have not yet caught up to: 🔴 Lie #1: "Vaping is mostly nicotine addiction." It isn't. In my caseload, only 13% of vape relapses correlate with nicotine cravings. The other 87% correlate with something completely different. 🔴 Lie #2: "If patches got smokers off cigarettes, they'll get vapers off vapes." They won't. Cigarettes are EPISODIC — a 7-minute ritual, 20 times a day. Vaping is CONTINUOUS — 200+ hand-to-mouth gestures per day. Patches address dose. They cannot address frequency. 🔴 Lie #3: "Willpower is the answer." If I hear another GP say "you've just got to want it more" I think I'll actually scream. We don't tell people with broken legs to "want it more." We give them crutches. 🔴 Lie #4: "Just count down the days." Counting days is HOW you fail. The brain has wired the gesture itself as the addiction. Until you replace the gesture, you're trying to hold your breath underwater for the rest of your life. 🔴 Lie #5: "There's no real alternative." There is now. 14 months ago, a Sheffield man named James Carter walked into my Manchester clinic with something he'd built in his shed. A wooden inhaler. Zero nicotine. Zero vapour. Designed specifically to break the LOOP — which is what we've been telling our patients about for 20 years and never had a tool for. I was sceptical. I tested it across 47 of my own patients on a clinical observation basis. ✅ 12-week vape-free retention: 73% ❌ Standard NRT: 14% I'm not paid by anyone. I have no commercial relationship with this company. I'm a clinician who watched her patients finally have an answer. If you've tried patches, gum, willpower, or apps and you're STILL vaping — please read this. It's the most important piece of writing I've put my name to.
