How we count

Ad text

I can never show my face at that park again. My son painted my face this morning. He's 4 and we just moved to a new place. He doesn't know anyone here and neither do I. He handed me the markers and said "mommy you be the tiger" so I said yes because I'm desperate to be the fun mom in a city where I have zero friends. He covered my entire face. Orange and black stripes with whiskers across both cheeks. He even got my eyelids and clapped when he was done. He went on his “quiet time” after. I folded laundry, wiped the counter, but then I sat on the couch staring at nothing for at least 10 minutes because my mind started blanking. He wakes up and wants the park. So I say yes because there's a group of moms there every afternoon and I've been telling myself for 2 weeks I'm finally going to introduce myself. I get his shoes, put on his sunscreen, and make sure to have his sippy cup. We walked 3 blocks to the park. We got to the park and I smiled at the moms on the bench. One smiles back but her smile is... weird. Like she's working hard at it. Another mom glances at me but looks away too fast. A kid says to my son "why does your mom look like that" and he goes "she's a tiger" like it's the most obvious thing in the world. I open my phone camera. Full tiger with whiskers and an orange forehead. I looked like this for 3 blocks. Past the mailboxes. Past the neighbor watering his lawn who I now realize was not just being friendly when he smiled. I ended up taking him home. Made mac and cheese. Let him watch Bluey while I sat in the bathroom asking myself how a grown woman forgets she has an entire animal painted on her face. But here's the thing. This has been happening quite a bit. I left the oven on for 4 hours last week. Nothing in it. Just on. I called my son by our dog's name at his preschool orientation but didn't catch it until the teacher said it back to me. I went to Target for diapers but came home with a candle and no diapers. I'm so tired by 2 pm that I negotiate with myself to stand up. I've gained 15 lbs eating less than I ever have. And my hair is thinning in places I pretend not to notice. So I told my doctor something feels wrong. She said it's just stress. "You're a young mom, you just moved, it's a lot." So she gave me an anxiety prescription. I took it for 3 months but nothing changed. I still had brainfog, didn’t lose weight, and I was so exhausted I almost fell asleep at a red light. 2 weeks after the tiger incident my son begged me to go back to the park. I didn't want to but he didn't care. So we went. I sat on the far end of the bench. But a mom from that day walked over, sat next to me, and said "hey, tiger mom." I wanted to disappear. Her name is Val. We talked for a while about normal stuff. Kids, the heat, the apartment complex. But then she got quiet for a second and said "can I be honest with you about something?" I said sure but I didn't know what was coming. "You remind me of myself about 8 months ago." I laughed but she didn't. "I'm serious. When you saw yourself on your phone that day, you didn't laugh. Every other mom at that park would've laughed. But you looked like you couldn't understand how it happened. Like it scared you. The way you walked back to the bench after... you looked like you were carrying something a lot heavier than a diaper bag." I didn't say anything because she was describing something I hadn't told anyone. "I used to have that same look," she said. "Every day. I'd forget things that should've been impossible to forget. So I'd just stand there trying to figure out if something was actually wrong with me or if this is just what being a mom is." She told me she spent 2 years barely functioning. Couldn't think straight. Kept gaining weight no matter what she ate. Hair coming out in clumps every time she showered. So tired that 8 hours of sleep felt like nothing. But her doctor ran bloodwork and told her she was fine. Then a friend told her to get her thyroid checked. She ended up having Hashimoto's. So she got put on thyroid medication and her numbers improved. But she didn't. "I spent months thinking the medication was broken. But then my sister sent me this video. Some thyroid doctor on YouTube. I watched it at 1 in the morning while my feet were freezing under 2 blankets." "He was talking about a study that just came out," she said. "Researchers looked at women who were on thyroid medication but still felt terrible. Women who were taking levothyroxine every morning. Eating Brazil nuts for selenium. Taking vitamin D, B12, and magnesium. Even cutting out gluten. They were doing everything their doctor and the internet told them to do. But still felt like garbage." "Turns out almost all of them had the same problem. They had an organ that was starved of compounds needed to activate thyroid conversion. The doctor called them conversion activators. Without them, the whole process doesn’t work. So it didn’t matter how much medication you used." She said the doctor explained that your thyroid produces something called T4. But T4 isn't what your body actually uses. It has to convert it into something called T3. T3 is the one that runs your energy, metabolism, hair, and mood. But that conversion doesn't happen inside your thyroid. It happens in your liver, but it only works when your body has the right conversion activators to do the job. "But here's what got me," she said. "Every doctor, every endocrinologist, every specialist these women had seen kept treating the thyroid. They would just tell them it’s a thyroid issue and put them on levo, but the study found it was never the thyroid. It was the liver the whole time. The liver is where the conversion actually happens. So they were treating the wrong organ for years." "He said it's like filling a shopping cart with everything you need, you get to the register, but you forgot your wallet. Everything's right there but you just can't check out." "And these women in the study, once they got the missing activators, their bodies started converting again. That's when things actually changed for them." That's why her doctor kept saying her levels were fine while she was falling apart the whole time. "So you can keep adding more medication onto a system that's stuck," she said. "Or you can support the part that actually moves things forward." She said that's when she found these drops that targeted conversion activators. It was 4x more absorbable than pills so it was something her body could actually use. She said by the end of the first week the brain fog started lifting. By week 2 she stopped being cold all the time. Her feet were finally warm at night for the first time in years. By month 2 her hair stopped coming out in clumps and managing her weight stopped feeling impossible. She said she started feeling like herself again instead of wondering why she still felt broken when her doctor said she was fine. She looked at me and said "you should go get your thyroid checked out. And when it comes back the way I think it will, I'll send you what I take." So I did. And she was right, I ended up having Hashimoto's. I texted her from the parking lot and she sent me the drops that same night. I've been on them for 6 weeks now alongside my medication. I'm not saying I'm a different person. But I am saying I remembered to switch the laundry without setting an alarm. My feet were finally warm for the first time in years. I can brush my hair without having so much fall out anymore. I finally feel like I'm in there again. Val and I go to that park together now. Our kids are best friends. Last week she looked at me and said "told you" and I almost cried at the playground. The first friend I made in this city started with me walking 3 blocks in full face paint because my brain couldn't hold a single thought for 45 minutes. If you're sitting there reading this wondering if something's off with you and want to fix it. I'll leave the link to what I've been taking below. It's the same thing Val sent me. https://actora.shop/products/actora-thyroid-support-drops P.S. We're making chocolate chip cookies tonight. Some feelings still need to be eaten.
