Last week we explored the remarkable gut microbes getting on with keeping the hindgut ecosystem in balance. This week, we're moving one layer deeper - because behind every healthy ecosystem is something equally remarkable. Meet the living cells that line your horse's digestive tract, protecting both the gut ecosystem and the horse it belongs to. Thing is, the microbes don't simply live in the gut. They live right alongside a dynamic - yet delicate - protective barrier that's working every second of every day to act as the ultimate gatekeeper. It decides what stays safely inside the digestive tract for elimination, and what gets absorbed into the bloodstream to be utilised and processed. And that's where this week's story begins - what happens when the dysbiosis shift spirals? This week we're moving from microbes to cells, exploring what happens when the gut's protective barriers come under pressure. โข Leaky gut & Faecal Water Syndrome โข Gastric ulcers โข Colic Three different conditions โ with one connected story. So hereโs a thing. Healthy ecosystems are remarkably resilient, with most adapting and regaining their balance happily. But sometimes the pressure doesn't let up โ especially during summer. One of the biggest reasons? The hindgut microbes don't simply use fibre to fuel the horse... they need fibre because it's also their food. When horses spend long periods grazing lush pasture with very little long-stem forage passing through the hindgut, those fibre-loving microbes gradually lose their competitive advantage - and nature hates a vacuum. As their numbers decline, less friendly bacteria that thrive on readily fermentable sugars and starches begin filling the space instead. Like every living organism given its preferred food, those bacteria multiply. They produce acids and gases that gradually change the normally stable environment of the hindgut, and before long the hindgut becomes more acidic than it was ever designed to be. It burns - and it hurts. Meanwhile, the gut lining isn't simply sitting there watching. It's living tissue, constantly trying to protect itself and repair itself. But eventually, even the body's most remarkable barrier begins to struggle. And suddenly the horse is telling us this is no longer just a microbial wobble. Something deeper is now happening. One of the things thatโs fascinated me from the getgo is just how delicate the gut lining really is. The entire lining separating the inside of your horse's digestive tract from the rest of their body is only a single cell thick. Yes you read that rightโฆ Yet despite being so incredibly thin, it performs one of the most important jobs in the whole body - the ultimate bouncer. That's its job in a nutshell - it's what a healthy protective barrier is designed to do. Under the microscope, the cells lining the gut almost look as though they're held together by thousands of tiny zips, pulled tightly together to form an effective barrier. But when the gut comes under prolonged pressure, those normally tight junctions can begin to loosen slightly โ and suddenly, the barrier becomes โleakyโ. And once this happens, toxic undigested matter that would normally stay inside the digestive tract may begin crossing into places they were never meant to go. The immune system quite rightly notices this, and suddenly has a whole lot more work to do (with a bit of panic on the way). This is just one of the reasons leaky gut is about far more than digestion alone - it can influence the whole horse because the immune system is now on red alert, responding to something it would much rather never have seen. This is what we commonly call ๐น๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ธ๐ ๐ด๐๐, the scientific term - "๐ถ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐น ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐๐", and what some vets call a "๐ด๐๐ ๐ถ๐ป๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ปโ. But perhaps the most important thing to understand is this... It's the point where the horse can no longer compensate. The gut has been adapting, the microbes have been balancing, and the lining has been repairing. But eventually the pressure becomes too much and the barrier simply can't keep up anymore. That's why I always ask, "๐ช๐ต๐ ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฑ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ต๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ฒ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ผ๐ฝ ๐น๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ธ๐ ๐ด๐๐ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฟ๐๐ ๐ฝ๐น๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฒ?" And once we understand why, choosing the right support suddenly becomes much easier. For me, one of the biggest answers is surprisingly simple - have we given the hindgut enough of the food it evolved to depend on? Those wonderful fibre-fermenting microbes don't thrive on buckets of feed - they thrive on one thing only - long-stem forage moving steadily through the digestive tract. Quality meadow hay, mixed grasses, slow chewing, acid buffering, hours spent fermenting fibre. Without that foundation in place, we're asking our horse's gut ecosystem to recover while taking away the very thing its beneficial microbes rely on most. It's one of the reasons I spend so much time talking about forage before I ever talk about supplements. Why? Because supplements are there to support the ecosystem... not replace its foundations. And while supplements are there to support biology, they can't completely overcome biology when the foundations aren't in place. When we talk about "repair", we're not talking about performing magic - the body needs us to reduce the pressure that caused the damage in the first place, and provide the right building materials needed for repair. Meet our support crew - ๐๐๐๐๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ผ๐, ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ธ๐๐๐๐๐๐ข๐ ๐๐ข, and our ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐ด๐๐ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐บ๐บ๐ฒ โข ๐๐๐๐๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ผ๐ โ the next step of a wider digestive support plan following dysbiosis โ providing targeted nutritional support for the cells that form the body's most important digestive barrier. From here, support can be adapted depending on what you're seeing. โข ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ธ๐๐๐๐๐๐ข๐ ๐๐ข โ where gut-lining support and microbial balance are both required within one combined programme (combines our SiboCARE, GutAminos, and Spirulina into one convenient blend, helping support microbial balance, nourishing the intestinal lining, and maintaining the immune-rich environment of the hindgut). โข ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐ด๐๐ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐บ๐บ๐ฒ โ when a more structured approach is needed, for horses needing a step-by-step pathway that combines comfort support, microbial rebalancing, intestinal support, and wider recovery support (following the sequence of Alleviate, Stabilise, Reset & Restore, this programme combines EquiNatural's DuoBute, LeakyGutCOMBO, and LKLCARE). All helping support one of the body's most remarkable protective barriers while asking the bigger question: "What changed... and how do we stop it happening again?" Put simply, if we never answer that question, we're simply repairing the same wall over and over again while the roof is still leaking. GutAminos, LeakyGutCOMBO, and our Hindgut Reset Programme are in our July collection with 20% off all month. EquiNatural 2026 01761 325032 [email protected]
