"Look at me, not them." Topper said it against my temple as his arm tightened around my waist. We were at Boneyard Beach for the end-of-school bonfire. Down the sand, the Pogues had their own fire. They live on the Cut, the working-class side of Kildare Island. We live on Figure Eight, the wealthy side. I had only looked over at their fire for a couple of seconds, but Topper noticed right away. Topper and I have been dating for almost a year. Everyone at school treats us like the golden couple. He is athletic, handsome, and polite to my parents. But he is also deeply insecure. Whenever we are around other people, he keeps a hand on me. He pulls me against his side, wraps his arm over my neck, or holds my waist. If another guy looks my way, Topper never starts an argument. He just pulls me closer and kisses my cheek, making sure everyone sees that I belong to him. If I try to pull away, he acts hurt. He says he is only showing how much he loves me. That makes me feel guilty, as if I am wrong for wanting personal space. Tonight was supposed to be the start of our final summer before college, but I already felt trapped. I needed a minute to breathe without his hands on me. I told him I was grabbing a drink from the cooler in the bed of his truck. I walked over to the tailgate by myself. I pulled a cold can from the ice and took a slow breath. For a few seconds, my shoulders dropped. Then I heard his footsteps in the sand behind me. Topper draped his heavy arm over my shoulders and pulled me back against his chest. A couple of our friends were standing by the tailgate. They raised their plastic cups and smiled at us, thinking it was sweet. Topper smiled back at them, keeping up the performance. Then he leaned down and spoke into my ear, his voice too quiet for anyone else to hear. "Are you with me tonight or not?" Topper's arm stays heavy over my shoulders, keeping me pinned against his ribs. He smiles so our friends think it's sweet, waiting for me to answer. You decide what happens next. #interactivestory #sagaland
