If you're on HRT and it's been brilliant for you, but your hair's still thinning and coming out in the brush, this is worth a read. Because I finally worked out why, and nobody had ever bothered to tell me. πŸ’• Right, first things first, the HRT. I will defend that stuff to anyone who'll listen. It changed my life. And I don't say that lightly, I'm not one for being dramatic, but it genuinely did, it changed my life. Because before it, I was in a right state, only I didn't really know it at the time, you don't, do you. You just think, well, this is me now. I wasn't sleeping a wink, soaked through in the night, throwing the covers off and dragging them back on, then wide awake at three staring at the ceiling. The hot flushes would come over me out of nowhere, in the middle of Tesco, in a meeting, didn't matter. The brain fog was the worst of it, I'd take myself upstairs for something and stand there on the landing without the foggiest what I'd come up for. And the moods, I'd snap at everyone and then feel terrible about it. I felt flat. Old. Just not me. And I'd more or less decided that was the rest of my life sorted out for me, all downhill from there. And then I got on the HRT, the right one for me, mind, it took a while to get there, and within a few months it was like somebody had handed me back to myself. I slept. The fog cleared. I felt warm and human and like I could be bothered with things again. I can't tell you the difference. So if you're sat there wondering whether to go for it, don't ask me, because I'll only ever tell you to do it. Best thing I ever did, hands down. So I wanted that said nice and loud before the next part. Because this isn't me having a pop at HRT. It's the opposite. It's the thing I wish someone had told me to do alongside it. Because the HRT sorted near enough everything. The only thing it didn't help was my hair. And that was what did my head in. Because I thought, well, it's sorted all the rest, the sleep, the moods, the fog, the lot, so my hair'll surely come good and all, won't it, just give it time. So I gave it time. Gave it months. And nothing. If anything there was more of it coming out. It's the shedding, mainly. Hair all over my brush every morning, more than there's any right to be. Clearing it out of the shower drain and trying not to look at how much was there. My parting getting that little bit wider every time I checked it, and my ponytail going thinner and thinner, the bobble going round an extra turn now. And you can't help where your head goes with it, can you. I'd catch that parting in the mirror under the bathroom light and think, is this how it starts. Is this me on my way to being one of those ladies with the see-through hair, where you can make out the scalp right through it. Every blooming morning, in the brush and round the plughole, the one thing that never came good when everything else did. πŸ˜” And, well. I'll tell you the truth, because what's the point otherwise. It got to me more than I let on. Nobody knew. But finally feeling like you again after all that, and then your own hair letting you down every single morning, it knocks your confidence something rotten. There were days I didn't feel attractive at all. Didn't feel much like a woman, truth be told. You start having these little thoughts, don't you. Like, maybe this is just me now. Maybe it really is just my age and I'd best get used to it. I never said any of that to a soul. But it was there, ticking away in the back of my head. So I brought it up at my HRT review. Told the nurse, look, my hair's still coming out. And honestly, nothing. 😀 She nodded along, ever so nice, and said oh, it's very common at our age, try a thickening shampoo, one of the caffeine ones, and give it time. And that was it. That was the sum total. Your age. A shampoo. Give it time. Off you pop. 😀 And I could've screamed, because I'd already been trying the thickening shampoos for months, and they did absolutely nothing. I must have gone through five or six of them. Every single time I thought, this'll be the one that does it. I'd even done a stretch on those biotin tablets from the GP, and not a thing to show for it. And it's the same every time, isn't it. You finally pluck up the courage to say something's wrong, and they pat you on the head, tell you it's your age, and send you off with a shampoo. Do you know how hard I had to fight just to get the HRT in the first place? Years of being told it was just the menopause and to get on with it. It's your age, love. As if that's an answer. So I came away thinking, is that really all there is then. Shampoos and grinning and bearing it. Now, here's what still annoys me, and it's half the reason I'm sat here on a Saturday morning writing all this down. The thing that finally gave me my answer? It wasn't a doctor. It wasn't the nurse. It was a post on Facebook, a bit like this one, some woman explaining the whole thing, and it was like a light going on. And like a fool, I kept scrolling and didn't save it. I've looked for it so many times since and just cannot find it again. So I'm writing my own, so the next woman doesn't lose it like I nearly did. What she explained, and what I went and checked for myself after, was so simple I was almost cross nobody had put it to me before. It's this. HRT tops your hormones back up. That's its job, and it does it beautifully, that's exactly why I felt so much better in myself. But topping your hormones back up is not the same thing as rebuilding what your body's already lost while those hormones were dropping. And one of the main things you lose, in all those years, is collagen. Loads of it. And collagen, see, I'd always thought that was a face cream sort of word, something to do with wrinkles. It is not. It's what the skin your hair actually grows out of is built from. Every hair on your head grows from a little root, and those roots sit in a foundation made of collagen, and it's that foundation that keeps your hair anchored in and growing strong. And in the lead-up to all this, while my hormones were going haywire, my body had quietly been losing that foundation out from under my hair. So the HRT topped my hormones back up, lovely, and that's why I felt human again. But it was never going to crawl up to my scalp and put back the foundation that had already worn away. That's just not what it's for. It's a totally different job. And the shampoos never stood a chance either, they only ever touch the hair that's already there, never the foundation it grows from. And there I'd been, two years, waiting for the wrong things to fix it. πŸ™Œ And when that finally clicked, honestly. I can't even tell you where I was when it landed, but I know I was well chuffed. Because it meant it was never that I was just getting old and had to lump it. It was that the one thing my hair actually wanted, the collagen put back, was the one thing the HRT was never going to give it. There was an answer after all. So what you want, alongside your HRT, not instead of it, never instead of it, is to put that collagen back yourself. And the one that kept cropping up everywhere, the one that's actually made properly for this and not just some cheap thing they've knocked together, is called Elavate. And the reason it does the trick for your hair, when all those shampoos never did a thing for mine, is it's the proper collagen that rebuilds the foundation itself. And there's more than one type in it, because your body wants different sorts for different jobs, and the cheap ones can't be bothered. It's got biotin in it and all, which your hair itself is fed by, so the roots and the hair are both getting looked after at once. That's the bit the GP's tablets were missing, the foundation to go with it. And a big dose, eight grams, far more than you'll get in the bargain ones. It's not a thickening shampoo, it's not covering anything up. It's putting back the actual thing my hair had run out of. ⭐ And what sealed it for me was the reviews. Over twenty thousand women in the UK, all five stars, and so many of them saying the exact same thing I'd been feeling, that they were on HRT and doing really well apart from their hair, and this was the missing piece. So I started taking it alongside my HRT. And I kept the HRT exactly as it was, I want that crystal clear, I'd not come off that for anything. A scoop in a glass of milk every morning, tastes of chocolate, no bother at all. First month, I'll be honest with you, not a lot happened. I did think, oh here we go, another one for the pile. But I stuck at it, and round about the eight week mark, I noticed something one morning while I was getting ready. I'd done my hair in the mirror and not thought about it once. No checking the parting. No counting what was in the brush. And when it dawned on me, I realised there'd been hardly anything in the plughole all week either. No handful. I wasn't having to not look anymore. I stood there a bit gobsmacked, because I'd well and truly made my peace with that being gone for good. πŸ™Œ By a few months in, there were little baby hairs coming through all along my parting, you have to look close but they're there, loads of them. My ponytail's filled out enough that the bobble's back to where it used to go. And that heart-sink at the brush every morning, the one that had become the background noise of my whole life, had quietened right down. And if anything I felt a bit silly, that I'd spent two years thinking this was just my lot, when all it needed was putting back the one thing I'd run short of. πŸ’› So if you're on HRT, and you love it like I do, but your hair's still thinning away and coming out in the brush, and somebody's fobbed you off and told you it's just your age, please, please don't take that as the end of it. Your HRT is doing exactly what it's supposed to. This is just the one job it can't do for you, and you can sort the rest yourself, alongside it, dead easy. ⚠️ Quick warning, mind, it does sell out. I got caught short waiting on it to come back in once, so I keep a spare in the cupboard now. Oh, and there's a money-back guarantee on it, three months, send it back if it does nothing for you. So you're risking nothing by giving it a go, are you. Which is a sight more than I can say for the two years I sat waiting on my HRT to do a job it was never built for. πŸ‘‡ Link's below. It's the UK one, the proper one with the collagen and the biotin in it, more than one type. That's the one that matters. If you're on HRT and your hair's still coming out, this is what nobody tells us ladies about lol. Hope it helps some of you. x
