There is a different kind of balance that comes with building a life together as two business owners, and most people do not fully see it from the outside. My husband, Tom, opened his taekwondo school more than 20 years ago after coming to the U.S. from South Korea. I built JSMM over that same span of time, with the same level of commitment and responsibility. Two very different businesses, but the weight of ownership feels very similar. Between meetings and commitments, we find time where we can. Coffee at thebetsyhotel, a walk through Miami Beach and a chance to slow the pace without needing it to be anything more. That is usually what it looks like for us. Not long stretches of time away, but intentional time within full schedules. The truth is that when both people are building something, the pressure does not really go away and the calendars rarely line up perfectly. What helps is respect for what each person is carrying and a willingness to meet in the middle. It is not perfect, but it is real and ours.
