Long before The Sourdough Playbook existed, one question I got asked again and again was: "Which sourdough book or eBook should I buy?" It usually came from someone who had been reading my posts for a while, liked the way I explained things, and asked if I had a book of my own. At the time, my answer was always the same. "No, I don't." Then came the obvious follow-up. "Okay... so which one would you recommend?" To be honest, that's a fair question. Whenever someone asked, I'd spend time looking at what was already available before making a recommendation. Over time, that gave me a much clearer picture of the different kinds of sourdough resources already out there. At the same time, something else was happening on this page. People were saving my posts. Printing them. Putting them into binders. Pulling them up while they baked. Sharing them with friends. That's when I realised there was another need entirely. Instead of answers scattered across hundreds of my Facebook posts, people wanted one place where everything was organised in the order it actually made sense to learn. That's what eventually became The Sourdough Playbook. It wasn't created because the world needed another sourdough book. It was created because this community deserved a better way to learn than scrolling through hundreds of Facebook posts. And because I'd already spent so much time researching other sourdough resources, I knew exactly what I wanted it to be; and just as importantly, what I didn't want it to be. That's why I think it's helpful to show you what else is out there before I tell you what's inside the Playbook. ••• From everything I researched, most digital sourdough guides seemed to fall into three broad categories. 1. Starter Guides These focus almost entirely on creating and maintaining a sourdough starter. Many of the ones I came across were around 20 to 35 pages and commonly priced between $5 and $15. They're excellent if your goal is simply getting a healthy starter established. But once your starter is active, you'll usually find yourself looking elsewhere for bulk fermentation, shaping, proofing, hydration, baker's percentages, flour selection, troubleshooting, and everything that comes afterwards. ••• 2. Recipe-First eBooks Many of these were priced somewhere around $15 to $20. Some are genuinely excellent collections of recipes and often include helpful technique notes. If your dough behaves exactly like the author's dough, they work beautifully. But sooner or later, every baker discovers that dough doesn't always behave the same way. Your flour may be different. Your kitchen temperature may be different. Your humidity may be different. Your starter may be stronger or weaker. Even your water, your mixing method, and the way your dough ferments can change the outcome. That's why so many bakers eventually ask questions like: "I followed the recipe exactly. Why didn't mine turn out like yours?" Or... "I measured everything correctly. What went wrong?" Usually, the recipe isn't the problem. It's simply that recipes can't prepare you for every variable your own kitchen introduces. Recipes teach you what to do. Understanding teaches you why it works—and how to make good decisions when your dough doesn't behave exactly like someone else's. ••• 3. Education-Focused Guides These were much less common in my research. They also tended to be longer and generally priced $25 and above, reflecting the amount of teaching they contain. One of the most impressive resources I came across was an award-winning, 140-page troubleshooting guide focused specifically on why sourdough goes flat. It's genuinely well put together. But it goes very deep on one part of the process rather than taking readers through the complete journey from building a starter to baking consistent loaves. That made me realise something. Many resources are designed to solve one piece of the puzzle. Very few are designed to teach the whole process progressively. ••• Then I looked at calculators. The closest comparison I found was a subscription-based toolkit offering seven online calculators for around $15 USD per year. It looked genuinely useful. But you don't own it. You can't use it offline. And it doesn't include a guide. That observation helped shape how I eventually designed my own bundle. ••• So, how did I approach it differently? Instead of creating just another recipe book... Or just another calculator... I combined both. The Sourdough Playbook is a 152-page, 14-chapter PDF guide that takes you through the complete sourdough journey; from creating and maintaining your first starter to understanding fermentation, shaping, baking, troubleshooting, flour blending, hydration, baker's percentages, reading your crumb, and much more. It follows the same plain, straightforward teaching style you've come to know from my posts, but goes much deeper. Many of the chapters grew out of the questions people asked here every day. Others came from concepts that kept resurfacing in my posts and comments, or topics I realised deserved a much deeper explanation than a Facebook post could ever provide. Instead of leaving those answers scattered across hundreds of posts, I brought them together into one progressive guide, organised in the order that actually makes sense to learn. Alongside it is the Baker's Math Calculator. A collection of nine (9) practical tools that help with flour blending, recipe scaling, target dough weight, hydration adjustments, starter feeding, water temperature, banneton sizing, and several other calculations that many bakers end up repeating by hand. It works online on any device. It also comes as an offline Excel version. No subscription. No renewal. Just a one-time purchase. The Playbook helps you understand the why. The calculator takes care of the maths. Together, they're designed to help you spend less time calculating and more time understanding what your dough is telling you. ••• I'm not suggesting it's the only good sourdough resource available. There are some genuinely excellent books and guides out there, and I learned a great deal while researching them. But I built this one to solve the need I kept seeing every day on this page. People weren't struggling because they lacked recipes. They were struggling because they didn't fully understand what their dough was trying to tell them. That's what The Sourdough Playbook was created to help with. ••• Since releasing it, I've had the privilege of hearing from bakers around the world. A professional baker and bread teacher with more than 40 years of experience told me it cuts through much of the conflicting and confusing information available today. Beginners have told me they finally baked their best loaf. Others have said they now understand bulk fermentation in a way they never did before. Some have shared that they adjust hydration with confidence instead of guessing. And one message simply read: "My bread has never been better." Those are the kinds of messages I hoped to receive. Because they tell me the Playbook is doing exactly what it was designed to do. ••• If you're comparing sourdough resources and wondering which one is right for you, I hope this has given you a clearer picture. The $19 price is still available, for now. When this window does close, it moves to $27 and stays there. If you'd like to take a closer look at everything included in The Sourdough Playbook Bundle, you'll find the link in my bio and in the comments below. As always, I hope it helps someone. ~ Neme's Kitchen
