The return of your freeze response doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve gone backward. This is one way we can profoundly misunderstand our nervous system. We do the healing. We become more resourced. We begin trusting ourselves. We feel clearer, stronger, more connected to who we are and what we want. And then we step toward something bigger. More visibility, responsibility, intimacy, creative expression, power. More of the life we have been asking for. And suddenly, the old patterns appear again. You second-guess yourself. Your mind searches relentlessly for the “right” answer. What felt clear yesterday suddenly feels confusing. Your energy drops just as you begin to expand. You procrastinate, pull back, question everything, or look outside yourself for another answer. It’s easy to interpret this as: Maybe I’m not ready. Maybe I need to heal more first. Maybe I was wrong about what I wanted. But freeze appearing at the edge of expansion is not necessarily evidence that the expansion is wrong. You have simply arrived at the edge of what your nervous system currently knows how to hold. So we don’t override it or allow it to make every decision. We don’t treat it as proof that something has gone wrong. We become curious about what it is revealing and learn to meet the places within us that still brace against greater aliveness, visibility, expression, power, or possibility. The goal of nervous system healing isn’t to create a life in which you are never activated again. It is to develop the capacity to remain in relationship with yourself as your life asks more of you. To become able to hold more of the life you actually desire.
