My dream died because of money.. I had all of the right things in place for my dream: I was traveling the country playing music with my best friends, recording with a multi-platinum record producer, and playing some of the larger festivals in the nation. Despite all of this, I too fell into the trenches of being a “starving artist”, and I was really stretched thin with my money. Like many, I had the dream of doing what I loved and playing music for a living. There was something that was so attractive about the thought of living a life without restrictions, breaking the cultural norm, and touching the hearts and lives of the masses. After going on many tours and pouring in everything I had financially, I was getting so close to seeing my dreams come to life, I could taste it. But something started standing in my way, and for me, that was money. I wasn’t responsible with my money, and when I was out on the road, it led to me living off of a few bucks a day, just enough for me to get some cans of Chef Boyardi, a banana, and some supplies to make some basic sandwiches. At first, I embraced the struggle and that stigma of the “starving artist”, but after a while, I started to realize that this type of lifestyle just wasn’t sustainable. It was affecting my physical health, my mental health, and my relationships. There was a night on one of our last tours that I did where we pulled into a gas station to rest and get some food, I opened my wallet, and I had nothing in it... I then checked my bank account, and I had a dollar... total.. I was hundreds of miles from home, and I was completely broke. Standing in the parking lot of the gas station, at 2:00 in the morning, I was alone in my thoughts wondering how I got to this point with the hum of the bright fluorescent lights above me that only amplified my anxiety.. My heart was racing, my chest felt heavy, and I felt the judgment of everyone around me.. I went into our trailer to get some alone time, my head fell into my hands, and the feelings of defeat started to overwhelm me.. How could it be that I put EVERYTHING that I had into this, and I only had a dollar to my name? How much longer would it be before I could feel at very least, comfortable with my decisions? It was at this point that I said to myself, “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! I can’t keep doing this to myself, something needs to change!” After we got home from that run of shows, the first thing I did was ask my parents if they had any suggestions for me. They recommended that I get myself some financial education to help me get better control of my money. At that time I was a rebellious 22-year-old who hated that idea, but I knew it was something I had to do. So I did my research, and I reached out to get some help. It turns out, that was the best decision I have ever made in my life. I got the help I needed, and I not only started to get my finances under control, but I also fell in love with the art that is personal finance. After reaching out for help, my finances drastically changed IMMEDIATELY! I thought it was going to take me 2-3 years to turn my situation around, and it actually only took me 9 months. Fast forward to today, I am now fulfilling my new dreams by helping hundreds of people with their money. I loved the feelings of freedom, confidence, clarity, and control that I got from doing this for myself, so I started helping other people with their money.
