“Hey,” she said, and while it sounded friendly, it sounded like the kind of friendly she might say to a stranger. Her eyes flickered, but then her shoulder lifted. He had bought it before they were married; it was only in his name. He hadn’t needed her to sign. Then her eyes narrowed. “Really?” He nodded. “Really.” “You sold it?” “Yeah.” “You didn’t keep any of it?” He shook his head no. “Where are you working?” she asked, her brows pinched in, and he had the feeling she was asking in spite of herself. Like she didn’t want him to know she wanted to know something about him. Maybe she didn’t. Maybe she was just asking because she couldn’t believe it. Maybe she really didn’t care. He held his hands out in a “here I am” kind of way. “I’m unemployed.” “You don’t have a job?” He shook his head. “Did you apply for one somewhere?” “Not yet.” “Oh.
