Photo by @joshuacogan | On my most recent journey through eastern Nevada, it revealed itself to me through the hands of those I encountered. I was in search of artists and craftsmen whose work is shaped—literally—by the land they live upon. Hands working with clay, metals, materials and living creatures large and small. Between each encounter, we wandered the landscape that gives rise to it all—the wide basins and high desert, the Ruby Mountains lifting suddenly from the sage. Long stretches of silence, wind, and distance, moving through the very places that teach the hands how to work. At the Tuscarora pottery school, I spent time with mystics of clay, shaping earthen vessels formed from the ground itself. In Elko, silversmiths and leather workers used practiced hands to create utilitarian art for rodeos and ranches. And beyond that, the cattlemen and horse riders—hands calloused by reins, weather, and care—living the lineage these objects are made for. Painters, potters, artisans, and craftsmen guided me through this latest adventure, one set of hands pointing me toward the next place, the next teacher, the next stretch of land. | Discover the wide-open heart of Nevada. Filled with historic ghost towns, star-studded skies, and so much more. The Silver State is yours to explore. Go on, #GetALittleOutThere. @travelnevada
