"Why does Nico have your sweater?" I asked Elias as he stopped in the hallway holding an empty mug. He looked at the faded grey hoodie in my hands, then glanced at Nico's closed bedroom door. He looked tired. He reached out and touched my arm. "Not out here," he whispered. "Come into the kitchen." Ten minutes earlier, I had walked into the hallway to get water. It was one in the morning, and the apartment was quiet. Elias and Nico were standing outside the bathroom, whispering. Nico was standing very close to him with a hard look on his face. Elias held his hands up and tried to calm Nico down. When Nico noticed me, he turned around and walked into his bedroom, leaving the door cracked. Elias walked toward the kitchen without saying anything. Nico had texted me earlier that evening telling me I could borrow an audio adapter for my morning class. Since his door was open, I knocked once and stepped inside to get it off his desk. Nico was in his bathroom with the water running. His closet door was open. Right on the top shelf, I saw the grey hoodie. Elias had worn that hoodie in every photo from his freshman year. It had his initials written on the tag. Last month, when I pointed at one of those photos and asked where it went, Elias laughed and told me he lost it at a party sophomore year. He hadn't lost it. It had been sitting in Nico's closet for two years. At the start of the semester, the university reassigned seven of us to Suite 314. We were complete strangers. Elias was the biomedical engineering junior who immediately started taking care of everyone. He made breakfast on weekends, fixed broken doors, and bought everyone's favorite snacks. But over the last two months, he started paying special attention to me. He stayed up late in the kitchen while I studied. He walked me to my early classes. Two nights ago, we sat on the living room couch until three in the morning, talking about his family. He held my hand the entire time. We haven't kissed yet, but I really liked him. I thought we were building something real. The only person Elias never seemed comfortable around was Nico. Nico produces music and barely talks to anyone. Elias told me they used to be close freshman year, but drifted apart. He made it sound like normal college distance. But whenever Nico walked into the room, Elias went quiet. If Nico sat on the couch, Elias went to his bedroom. It always felt tense, but Elias insisted nothing was wrong. Now we were standing in the dark kitchen. Elias turned on the electric kettle. That is what he always does when an argument starts. Whenever someone in the apartment is upset, Elias makes tea or cleans the counter. He hides behind being helpful so he never has to talk about himself. "He just borrowed it a long time ago," Elias said. He kept his back to me while he took two mugs from the cabinet. "We were close. It's not a big deal." "You told me you lost it at a party," I said. "And you two were arguing in the hallway ten minutes ago. What was he saying to you?" Elias turned around, but he looked down at the counter instead of my face. "He was just bringing up old stuff. You know how Nico is." "No, I don't," I said. "Neither of you ever tells the truth about it. Were you two together?" Elias hesitated. "No. We never dated. We had one night at the end of sophomore year where we kissed. Then we didn't talk about it. He sent a message, and I panicked and never answered. That was the whole thing." "That was two years ago," I said. "He still has your sweater folded in his closet. And every time you look at him, you look guilty." "I'm not guilty," he said. His voice stayed quiet. "I just don't want drama in the suite. I want things to be good between you and me." "Then stop lying to me about him." The kettle clicked off. Elias poured hot water into the mugs. He stirred honey into mine. He wiped the counter with a paper towel, moving slowly, dragging out the task. He was using his routine to protect himself, the way he always did. Elias sets a fresh mug of tea on the kitchen counter in front of me, giving me his gentle, tired smile. He slides the warm mug toward me. "Drink this. You don't need to worry about Nico."
