How we count

Ad text

At 62, I honestly don’t feel anchored to the past, nor do I wish I could go back to any specific moment because “things were better then.” I don’t feel like I’ve peaked, physically, mentally, emotionally, or professionally. I’ve had my share of struggles, just like everyone else. And as we all know, they don’t magically stop at any age. From being a single mom on welfare to living with major depressive disorder for a good chunk of my earlier years, I’m right up there with most humans. Being 62 also means I’ve experienced loss. I’ve lost several friends far too young, all to cancer, and my dog Toby, who was with me for 13 years. It means I’ve dealt with plenty of injuries and a few health scares too: slipped discs, a torn rotator cuff, sciatica, a close call with colon cancer, and more. What it does not mean, and this is deeply personal for each of us, is that I’m done being curious or open to life. Who would have told me that in my 60s I’d swim with sharks and stingrays, walk parts of El Camino in Spain, where I was born, tear up the dance floor with my 21-year-old, take improv and acting classes, decide to train for pull-ups, and say yes to so many things I never imagined? I know I have less time in front of me than behind me. But during my yoga teacher training in my 50s, I also became deeply aware of the circle of life and the importance of being present with who I am and what I can do now. I don’t think being older is better. I think every age has something worth fully inhabiting. I wasted much of my youth chasing thinness and living with an eating disorder. Now that that chapter is behind me, I’m not about to waste this stage resisting age or being consumed by it. No, thank you. How do you make peace with the passage of time? #thisis62 #pullupsafter60 #proaging
