"You don’t get to ignore my calls." Dean said it as he put his hand on the doorframe, blocking me from walking past him. He looked angry, but he also looked tired. He had pushed his way through the crowded hallway the second he saw me. He is six-foot-two and I am five feet tall, so he easily trapped me against the wall. Dean and I have been best friends for six years. We met in high school, and people always assumed we would date eventually. We never did. Instead, Dean went to college and slept with a different girl every weekend. Whenever he had a bad hockey game, failed an exam, or felt lonely, he came to my room. He would knock on my door at three in the morning, lie down on my bed, and expect me to comfort him. I was in love with him, so I let him do it. I took care of him, fed him, and listened to his problems for years. Twelve days ago, I finally hit my limit. Dean showed up at my dorm at three in the morning with a cut on his lip from a bar fight. He smelled like cheap perfume from the girl he had just spent the night with. He sat on my floor and complained about how annoying she was while I cleaned the blood off his face. I held the towel and felt completely humiliated. I was acting like his girlfriend, but he gave me no commitment in return. College is almost over, and I could not keep hurting myself like this. The next morning, I stopped answering his calls. I ignored his texts. I skipped our usual Sunday breakfast. I avoided him for twelve days straight. Now, he was cornering me by the stairs. He leaned closer and said, "Twelve days, Grace. Do you know how crazy that made me? I called you thirty times. I drove past your apartment every night. You can't just cut me off. We're best friends." "Best friends don't treat each other like this," I said. I was scared, but I looked right at him. "You only want me around when you need comfort. Then you go sleep with someone else. I am not your backup plan anymore." Dean stopped talking. He stopped smiling, too. He looked at me like he was terrified of losing me. Dean leans against the doorframe with both hands, his arrogant attitude gone as he looks down at me. Dean whispers, "I need you, Grace. I can't do this without you." You decide what happens next. #interactivestory #sagaland
